Plot Summary

It's the early 1940s and a World War is at hand. With most American males, including famous baseball players, going off to war, a plan is made to keep the baseball industry going by drafting women to fill their beloved men's shoes.

Enter Dottie Henson and Kit Keller, two sisters who battle each other both at their home on the farm and on the ball field. Kit, a decent pitcher at best, feels as though she's constantly in the shadow of her older, married, more athletic and all-around better sister, Dottie.

During the girls' struggle to see who can truly be "The Best," we meet many colorful characters, including Jimmy Dugan (a brilliant Tom Hanks), coach of the Rockford Peaches, the team Kit and Dottie play for. From there, the balls fly and the base runs just keep on comin'.

Mae Mordabito: What if at a key moment in the game my, my uniform bursts open and, uh, oops., my bosoms come flying out? That, that might draw a crowd, right?
Doris Murphy: You think there are men in this country who ain't seen your bosoms?

  • Little Boy [reading baseball Jimmy has just signed]: Avoid the Clap, Jimmy Dugan.

Trivia

  • Tom Hanks' character, Jimmy Dugan, is loosely based on real-life baseball slugger Jimmie Foxx.
  • When announcing the game the Peaches announcer (David L. Lander) uses the phrase "Oh Doctor!" during an exciting play. This phrase was made popular by 1940s and 50s Brooklyn Dodgers announcer Red Barber.
  • Rockford Peaches home field in the movie was filmed in Huntingburg, Indiana. The stadium was completely renovated and named League stadium after the movie crews left. In the movie you can see a barn in the background. The barn was actually only two-sided and covered a water slide.
  • The movie's line "There is no crying in baseball." was voted as the #54 movie quote by the American Film Institute (out of 100).
  • The home games for the Racine Belles were filmed at Bosse Field in Evansville Indiana. They retrofitted the entire stadium to look as it did in that era. The "Support the Racine Belles" signs still are on display today. The stadium is now used by the Evansville Otters, a Frontier League baseball team, and the ball girls wear the Belles uniforms.
