Overall Career
Santos was drafted in the fourth round of the 1997 draft (131st overall) by the Boston Red Sox. Known as an excellent defensive second baseman with speed and some power, he had an impressive season in class-A Augusta in 1999, batting .270 with 62 walks, 15 home runs, 57 RBI, and 25 steals (in 35 attempts). Unfortunately, his subsequent season did not live up to the promise that he showed in 1999: he hit .257 in AA in 2000 with three home runs.
Santos did get a chance to appear in the majors with the Red Sox late in the 2001 season, making his debut on September 8, 2001 and appearing in a total of 9 games with the rather forgettable batting line of .125/.211/.188 (two hits, one double, two walks, one RBI, 2 runs scored, and 7 strikeouts in 16 at-bats).
After spending two years in Pawtucket in 2002 and 2003, batting .260 and .237 with a combined 15 home runs and 21 stolen bases, Santos was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 2003 for pitcher Jamie Brown. After the trade, he appeared in 32 games with the Indians, batting just .224 but smashing three home runs. That proved to be his final season in the majors.
