Scouting Report

  • Tough as nails 1B with an excellent build for his age. Very good overall approach at the plate, with a good eye, bat speed, timing, and contact. Strong power to all fields. In the field, Rizzo is an average to above average defender with a solid arm. He has surprising lateral quickness for his size. Said to be a leader by example and a great teammate. ~ SoxProspects.com

Minor League Career

  • 2007: Rizzo was selected by Boston in the 6th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft and assigned to the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox. Due to the fact that he signed late into the summer Rizzo only played in 6 games, hitting 0.286 (6-for-21), with 6 runs, 3 rbi, and 1 home run. One stat that caught some scouts eye was that struck out only twice in 21 at-bats, a low total for a 17 year old in his first professional season.
  • 2008: Rizzo was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphona in May 2008. His treatment is expected to take 6 to 8 months, and he's said to have an excellent chance of cure and complete recovery.
