The Cy Young Award is named in honor of Red Sox great Cy Young, arguably the best pitcher in baseball history. The award was created in 1956 by commissioner Ford Frick and was originally only given out to one pitcher in all of MLB. In 1967, the award started to be given to one pitcher in each league. The award is voted on by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
