Scouting Report

  • Righty gets his four seam fastball up to 97 mph and his two seamer around 93-94 mph. Two-seamer has a good sinking motion. Changes speeds well. Also possesses a legit 87 mph slider with good movement, but he needs to locate it more consistently. Ultimately, Province's MLB potential likely rests on his ability to bring his slider to the next level. Pounds the zone, not afraid to pitch to contact. Strong pitcher's build. Excellent poise and presence. Above average fielder. Despite spending much of his career as a reliever, Province was converted to a starter in 2008. ~ SoxProspects.com
  • Province, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound righthander at Southeastern Louisiana, went undrafted as a junior in 2006 despite showing a plus fastball. Serving as the Lions’ closer this year, he kicked his fastball up to 94-97 mph by the end of the season and will be one of the better senior signs in the draft. Province also scrapped his curveball for a slider that improved tremendously in May, clocking at 86-88 mph in the last week of the regular season. He too could go in the second or third round, especially if a team is looking to save some money with a college senior. ~ Baseball America

Amateur Career

  • Chris did not have an encouraging start to his college career, giving up 33 runs (23 earned) in 22 1/3 innings in his freshman season (2004). Of the 33 hits he gave up that season, 12 were for extra bases. He walked and struck out the same number of batters, nine.
  • Province pitched only 21 2/3 innings his sophomore season, giving up 43 hits (7 extra bases) while giving up 20 runs (16 earned). There were some encouraging signs, however, as Chris did not walk a batter and struck out 14.
  • Chris made some major gains in his junior season, pitching 70 innings for the Lions, going 4-7 with 5 saves. Chris gave up 95 hits (16 extra base hits), walking 22 and striking out 49. He gave up 34 earned runs, but 49 total runs.
  • His senior season, Chris went 50 1/3 innings, giving up 55 hits (only 6 extra base hits - No HRs), walking 16 and striking out 41. Unlike his junior season, he only gave up 4 unearned runs.

Minor League Career

  • 2007: Province was selected by Boston in the 4th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft and assigned to the Single-A Lowell Spinners. In 3 appearances for Lowell, Province pitched 5.1 innings giving up zero runs, with 4 K's, 2 BB's and 1 save. Chris was then promoted to Greenville, where he finished out the season, making 15 appearances (33 IP), with a 4.91 ERA, 23/8 ratio of SO/BB, and tallied 2 saves.
