Overall Career

McCarty was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 1st round of the 1991 draft and made his major league debut in 1993. In June 1995, the Twins traded McCarty to the Cincinatti Reds. One month later he was shipping to the San Francisco Giants as part of a multi-player deal including Deion Sanders. In early 1998 he was sent to the Seattle Mariners, but this frequent traveler wasn't done moving around quite yet. After playing only 8 games with Seattle, he signed a deal with the Detroit Tigers before the 1999 season. The following year he signed a deal with the Oakland Athletics, who traded him to the Kansas City Royals five months later for cash. In November of 2002, he signed a minor league deal as a free agent with Oakland, who placed him on waivers in the middle of the 2003 season. It was then that he became a member of the Boston Red Sox, where he played from 2003 to 2005.

Not quite strong enough to earn himself a starting spot, McCarty was a perfect platoon partner as he hit extremely well against lefties. He was also used quite a bit as a defensive replacement for Kevin Millar late in games during his time with the Red Sox.

McCarty was released by the Red Sox in May 2005 and retired from the game of baseball. Several appearances on NESN imply that a broadcasting career may not be far off for this Stanford graduate.

Moment in the Sun

  • Had three pitching outings in 2004. In his final one, he struck out Rafael Palmiero and allowed only 2 hits
  • Hit a walkoff HR vs the Mariners in late May 2004

Trivia

  • During 2004 spring training, David was extremely motivated to make the team. He knew he was on the bubble so he also tried out as a pitcher, and was one of the few left handed pitchers on the squad which probably did contribute to his making the team.
  • He pitched in 3 games during the 2004 season, 2 at home and 1 on the road. Over 3.2 innings, he only gave up 2 hits and one earned run.
