Merle Theron "Doc" Adkins was born on August 5, 1872 in Troy, WI and died on February 21, 1934 (in Durham, NC). Adkins made his major league debut at the age of 29, on June 24, 1902. Doc's best pitch was a spitball, which was legal at this time.
After making his major league debut with the Boston Americans in 1902, Doc pitched in three more games that season (a total of 20 innings), compiling a 4.05 ERA and a 1-1 record despite allowing 30 hits and 20 runs in 20 innings. (Only 9 of those runs were earned.) Doc also had 2 hits in 9 AB.
