Overall Career

Sadler was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 1, 1998 with the Boston Red Sox. He was drafted by Boston in the 11th Round (299th overall) of the 1994 Amateur Draft. Besides Boston, Sadler has played with the Cincinnati Reds (2001), Kansas City Royals (2001 – ‘02), Texas Rangers (2002-‘03), and Arizona Diamondbacks (2004, 2007). He bats and throws right handed.

Donnie Sadler had been called the fastest man ever in the Sox organization, and once was considered a future lead-off hitter and second baseman. Sadler played parts of 1998, 1999, and 2000 with the Red Sox; a total of 72 games. Because he was the fastest player on the team, he was an asset as a pinch runner in late innings.

Sadler departed Boston on November 16, 2000 when the Red Sox obtained IF Chris Stynes from the Reds for Michael Coleman and Sadler.

Despite his lack of power (a career IsoP of .082), Sadler was suspended for 50 games on July 28, 2007 after testing positive for a drug of abuse in violation of the minor league drug prevention and treatment program.

In 418 career major league games, Sadler has a .202 batting average with six homers, 46 RBIs and 25 steals.

  • September 17, 1998: Sadler was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI as Boston defeated the Baltimore Orioles 3-2.
  • May 13, 2001: Leadoff hitter Donnie Sadler was 4 for 4 with 2 runs scored and played 6 innings at shortstop and 4 innings at second base in a ten-inning effort. Unfortunately, Sadler's Cincinnati Reds were defeated 4-3 by the Houston Astros.

Trivia

  • May 12, 2004: Donnie Sadler was knocked unconscious during batting practice after a batted ball struck him in the head. Pitcher Casey Daigle hit a ball that cleared the safety net in front of stretching players (including Sadler), and struck Donnie in the back of the head. Players quickly gathered around him after he collapsed, and he was helped off the field by the trainer. Sadler suffered a concussion. (link)
