History of the Red Sox and the GCL

Although the GCL first started in 1964 (First as the Sarasota Rookie League (1964), then the Florida Rookie League (1965)), the Red Sox first fielded a team in 1989 in Winter Haven. When the Sox moved their spring training home to Fort Myers in 1993, the GCL club was also moved.

Although the GCL used to have all the teams play each other, in a move to address costs, during the regular season, the three divisions only play teams within their division. Therefore, the GCL Red Sox face only three other teams during the GCL season, the Reds, Pirates and Twins (who also play in Fort Myers).

The GCL team has made four consecutive playoff appearance starting in 2003. The Team finally won the championship in 2006, defeating the Dodgers 2-1 in the 3 game championship series. It was the first Red Sox post-season Minor League Championship since the 1999 Augusta Greenjackets.
