Scouting Report

  • Bailey mainly plays 1B and DH (and some LF) these days after previously spending a lot of time as a catcher. He is adequate defensively, with below average range, a decent glove, and a good arm for a 1B. Above average power, leading the Red Sox minors in home runs in 2006. Good contact and plate patience. Slow on the basepaths, about what you'd expect from a converted catcher. Strikes out too much. Failed to impress during extended stints with the Red Sox in spring training 2007. Has potential to be a backup at the major league level, but not likely for the Red Sox. Bailey has been a team leader and model teammate with the Red Sox organization for five seasons. ~ SoxProspects.com

Minor League Career

Bailey began his career in the GCL, where he spent all of 1998. He had a solid year in 1999 in low class A, but was out of action for all of 2000. Jumped to Double-A in 2001, but was mediocre and traded to Montreal for a PTBNL. He bounced back in 2002 and reached Triple-A for the first time in 2003. Following the season, he signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox and had an outstanding season for Double-A Portland. After splitting 2005 between Portland and Pawtucket, he again reupped with the Sox and spent all of 2006 at Pawtucket, earning team MVP honors. He finished the season with a career high 22 home runs and 82 RBI, to go with a .383 on-base percentage, a .489 slugging percentage and 74 walks.

While Bailey has moved slowly up the minors, he has finally established himself in Triple-A. He has a solid bat, but because he is a below-average fielder in the outfielder and a poor receiver behind the plate, he is a classic tweener. Don't look for him to take David Ortiz's DH job any time soon. His best hope to make the majors is to latch on as a 3rd catcher/PH type player such as Matt LeCroy.

Bailey was called up to replace an ailing Kevin Youkilis for a series against the Detroit Tigers July 6-9, 2007. He appeared in all 3 games, going 1-9 with his lone Major League hit being a home run off starter Nate Robertson in his last at bat.
