Overall Career
Suppan, after going to the Diamondbacks from the Red Sox in the 1997 Expansion Draft, was then purchased a year later by the Kansas City Royals on September 3, 1998. He had his best overall season for Kansas City in 2001, going 10-14 with a 4.37 ERA. He became a free agent after the 2002 season, signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates on January 31, 2003 to a one-year, $500,000 contract.
In 2003, he started to have his best season (10-7 with a 3.57 ERA), and thus was a hot commodity at the trade deadline. The pitching-starved Red Sox acquired him on July 31, 2003, along with reaquiring Brandon Lyon and Anastacio Martinez for Mike Gonzalez, Freddy Sanchez and cash, after a previous trade for Scott Sauerbeck had to be reversed due to the Pirates finding Brandon Lyon's shoulder to be injured. However, Suppan did not continue the success he found with the Pirates with the Red Sox, going 3-4 with a 5.57 ERA in the second half, not making the Red Sox Postseason Roster.
After the 2003 season, he left as a free agent, signing with the St. Louis Cardinals, to a 2-year, $6 million contract. [1] In 2006, Suppan won a world series ring as a member of the Cardinals and was named World Series MVP. In the offseason, the Milwaukee Brewers inked Suppan to a four-year, $42 million contract, the largest in club history.
