Overall Career
On June 5, 1989, Joel Adamson was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round of the 1989 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. The following year, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 7th round of the 1990 amateur draft, this time deciding to sign with the team that picked him. He spent his first professional year in rookie ball, pitching with Princeton of the Appalachian League. In 1991 and 1992, he would split time between Philadelphia's A, A+ and AA affiliates with pretty good success. At the end of the 1992 season, on November 17, 1992, Adamson was traded by the Philadelphia Phillies with Matt Whisenant to the Florida Marlins for Danny Jackson.
Adamson started the 1993 season with the High Desert Mavericks of the California League, going 5-5 as a starter with a 4.58 ERA. Despite average numbers, he was called up to Florida's AAA affiliate, where he went 1-2 with a 6.92 ERA. Adamson would hover around .500 for the next two years, splitting time between the Portland Sea Dogs and the Charlotte Knights. In 1996, Adamson started the year with the Florida Marlins, making his major league debut on April 10 against the San Diego Padres. He appeared in nine games and posted a 7.36 ERA for Florida, and would spend the rest of the year with the Knights.
On November 25, 1996, Joel Adamson was traded by the Florida Marlins to the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later. (the Milwaukee Brewers would later send Ed Collins on December 10, 1996 to complete the trade) During the 1997 season, Adamson appeared in 30 games for the Milwaukee Brewers starting six of them and going 5-3 with a 3.54 ERA. On November 18, 1997 Adamson was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks as the 15th pick in the 1997 expansion draft. He started five games for the Diamondbacks during the 1998 baseball season, compiling a record of 0-3 to go along with a 8.22 ERA.
Adamson was released the following October and signed with the Oakland Athletics on December 11. Seeing some promise in the aging minor leaguer, the Boston Red Sox drafted Adamson from the Athletics on December 14 in the 1998 Rule 5 Draft. Used primarily as a reliever, Adamson posted a 2-4 record in 25 games to go along with a 6.02 ERA for the 1999 Pawtucket Red Sox. At some point during the season he found his way over to the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, the Tacoma Rainiers, where he appeared in 15 games with average results.
