Scouting Report
- Despite some early flashes of brilliance at the pro level, Otness's hitting flaws have been exposed at the AA level, where he has been unable to demonstrate solid contact, power, or on base ability. Decent defensively. None of his tools are above average. Hits lefties well, making him a good catcher to have in a backup role. ~ SoxProspects.com
Minor League Career
- 2004: Otness was signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2004 Amateur Draft. John made his pro debut in the Gulf Coast League. Otness quickly was promoted after 10 at-bats to Single A Lowell. There in Lowell, Otness wouldn't do much, as he only hit .276/.327/.353, with 2 HR and 29 RBI.
- 2005: In his second pro season, Otness would be promoted to Greenville. Otness would show some real promise, as he tore up the Sally league. Otness mashed to the tune of .331/.398/.469 with 12 HR, 67 RBI and only 42 strikeouts.
- 2006: Otness would stay in Single-A Wilmington for the entire 2006 season. At times Otness showed signs of his 2005 performance, but overall you could call the season a disappointment. John hit 0.281/0.339/0.373, but his power numbers dropped off as he went from 12 home runs in 2005 to only 3 in `06.
