Overall Career

Ken Grundt was born on August 26, 1969 in Melrose Park, Illinois. He attended Luther North high School in Chicago and afterwards, attended Missouri Southern State College. In 1991, Grundt was made the 1354th overall pick (54th round), by the San Francisco Giants, in the 1991 MLB Amateur draft. On November 9th, 1995, he was signed as a free agent by the Boston Red Sox. He opened up the 1996 season in AA Trenton at the age of 26 and posted 12.2 scoreless innings, only yielding six hits and striking out thirteen. This earned him a call-up to AAA Pawtucket where he posted a 4.60 ERA, earning a 9-4 record in 64.1 innings pitched. While not spectacular, it earned him a call-up to the Boston Red Sox, where he made his Major League Debut on October 8, 1996, wearing number 57. Facing the Blue Jays in Boston, Grundt opened up the ninth inducing a ground out to Ed Sprague. John Olerud stepped to the plate next, doubling to the left-center field gap. Grundt was then replaced by Stan Belinda who walked Jacob Brumfield before giving up a line drive double to SS Alex Gonzalez, plating Olerud and, thus, crediting the run to Grundt. This was his only appearance in 1996.

Following the 1996 season, Grundt was granted free agency, but re-signed with Boston in January of 1997. He pitched in two games that season, one against the Royals on May 13 and one against the White Sox on May 20. His numbers stood at a 9.00 ERA in 3 innings pitched with five hits allowed, zero strikeouts and one balk. Afterwards, he finished his season in AAA Pawtucket, posting a 5.32 ERA in 47 innings. On October 15, 1997, he was granted free agency and his Red Sox career was over.
