Scouting Report

  • Snyder utilizes a fastball, slider, curve, and a changeup. Fastball sits in the low 90s with some sink. Able to work out of the rotation, in short relief, or in the long role out of the pen. Good control - he won't walk too many batters, but when his command is off he can get knocked around. ~ SoxProspects.com

Overall Career

After being drafted 7th overall in the first round by the Kansas City Royals in 1999 Kyle Snyder made his major league debut with the Royals on May 1, 2003. He never developed to justify his high pick however and went on to post a 1-6 record with a 5.17 ERA in 15 starts in 2003. In 2005 he started only 3 games and posted a 1-3 record with a 6.75 ERA. In 2006, he started only one game for the Royals on 6/08 against Texas going only 2 innings and giving up 5 ER. After this he was put on waivers by the Royals, who evidently were finally fed up with waiting for their former top pick to develop into a serviceable pitcher.

Our beloved Sox, desperately searching for a 5th starter, claimed Snyder off waivers and gave him a spot start on 6/19/06 against the lowly Nationals. With the lowest of expectations, Snyder actually performed reasonably well going 5 innings giving up 3 runs but on only 4 hits. Also, the lanky and long haired Snyder was giving off heavy Bronson Arroyo vibes with a similar look and delivery, thus there remains lingering hopes he could develop into a similar diamond in the rough pitcher akin to Bronson. After this start he was optioned to Pawtucket and his spot was eventually given to another castoff sinker-baller, Jason Johnson. Snyder re-claimed his spot in the rotation on 7/16/06 and is currently pitching relatively well as the 5th starter.

Moment in the Sun

  • July 31, 2006 - Scheduled to start the following night, Snyder came out of the bullpen to pitch 4 1/3 innings of long relief after David Wells struggled in his first start back from injury, finishing the game and earning the win. His final line en route to a 9-8 walkoff victory: 4 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO
