Pro Career
While at Double-A New Britain in 2005 Jimenez appeared in 116 Games, getting 431 AB's. He hit .278 with a .349 OBP and an .811 OPS. Jimenez had 29 doubles, 16 home runs and 69 RBI for New Britian.
In 2006, Jimenez led Portland in home runs (17), and ranked second in RBI (70), runs scored (74) and slugging percentage (.471). Luis killed right handed pitching hitting .306 with 15 of his homers off righties. Lefties caused him some problems as he was just 25-for-121 (.207). Jimenez hit a healthy .310 with RISP and was 4-for-10 with the bases loaded.
After struggling through the first 25 games at Pawtucket in 2007, Jimenez was released on May 11 to make room for Alex Prieto. The Baltimore Orioles signed Jimenez to a minor league contract on May 15 and assigned him to Double-A Bowie.
Scouting Report
From Sox Prospects: "Big Venezuelan has very high power potential but strikes out a ton. Still manages to maintain a high OBP. Actually has decent speed for a man of his size. Has MLB potential if he can show more plate discipline. Defensively, Jimenez lacks great lateral quickness, but his glove is decent."
Awards
- 2002 Appalachian League All-Star (DH).
Notes
- Watch Jimenez in action and it's clear that his hero is David Ortiz. Jimenez copies many of Ortiz's mannerisms while at the dish, from his warm up hacks and batting stance, to spitting in his gloves.
- Rated as the no. 12 prospect in the Appalachian League in 2002 by Baseball America.
