Quotes

  • Pepper Leach: (Vaughn has just given up a grand slam after walking three straight batters) You want me to go get him?
Lou Brown: No, keep him in. Let's see how he reacts.
Lou Brown: (Vaughn hits the next batter) Interesting.
  • Willie Mays Hayes: What the hell league you been playing in?
Rick Vaughn: California Penal...
Willie Mays Hayes: Never heard of it. How'd you end up playing there?
Rick Vaughn: Stole a car.
  • Heywood: Going somewhere, meat?
Willie Mays Hayes: About 90 feet.
  • Harry Doyle: Heywood leads the league in most offensive categories, including nose hair. When this guy sneezes, he looks like a party favor.
  • Harry Doyle: JUUUUUUUUST a bit outside.
  • Pedro Cerrano (frustrated at Jobu's ineffectiveness in helping him hit breaking pitches): I'm pissed off now, Jobu....Look, I go to you, I stick up for you...you no help me now, I say "Fuck you, Jobu"...I do it myself.

Trivia

  • Charlie Sheen was a high school pitcher who was offered a baseball scholarship to the University of Kansas. In the movie he threw a 101mph fastball, but in reality Sheen could throw in the high 80s. This made it easier to simulate the fastball on film. Sheen's delivery is considerably more realistic than Tim Robbins' in Bull Durham.
  • Pete Vuckovich, who played New York Yankees slugger Clue Heywood, posted a 93-69 record in 11 seasons in the majors. He won the AL Cy Young Award in 1982.
  • The film's climactic game has an eerie similarity to a particular game in Red Sox lore. In the film, Willie Mays Hays reaches first base in a must-win game against the New York Yankees. Needing to steal 2nd base to get himself in scoring position, he takes off from 1st and slides in under the tag...from the Yankees shortstop, wearing a road gray jersey, #2. A similar situation unfolded in the 2004 ALCS, when the immortal Dave Roberts swiped 2nd under the tag of Captain Intangible. In both instances, the Yankees would go on to lose the game, and eventually go home losers.
  • Pedro Cerrano went on to become the President of the United States after having an accent-removal surgery and changing his name to David Palmer.
