Scouting Report
Boston native always dreamed of playing for the Sox. His career was on the fast track with a mid 90s fastball, and an outstanding curveball - until he injured himself in May 2003. Delcarmen had Tommy John surgery in May 2003, but returned to the mound a year later in May 2004. Post-surgery, Delcarmen's fastball may have actually gained velocity, as he has topped out in the high 90s. Delcarmen has average control, with decent changeup and a very good curve which he uses as his out pitch. ~ SoxProspects.com
Minor League Career
After being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2000 Amateur Draft, Delcarmen has made slow, but steady progress through the minor leagues. He made his professional debut in 2001 for the GCL Red Sox where he impressed with a 62/19 K/BB ratio and a 2.54 ERA.
In 2002 he had a solid year in low-class A Augusta's rotation, maintaining a good strikeout rate, although like many northeastern players, he was still very raw. He moved up to high-A Sarasota in 2003 where he got off to a good start, but in his fourth appearance he blew out his elbow, requiring Tommy John surgery. Out for the rest of the year, Delcarmen returned in 2004 making 19 appearances for Sarasota. While he was not spectacular, he showed very good signs in TJ recovery process. That fall, he pitched out of the bullpen in the Arizona Fall League.
He was often envisioned as a future reliever earlier in his career, and he converted to a bullpen role for good the next year for the very successful Portland pitching staff in 2005 that included Jon Lester, Jonathan Papelbon, Anibal Sanchez and Cla Meredith. Following Meredith's promotion, Delcarmen became the closer and eventually moved up to Pawtucket and even made 10 appearances in the majors.
2006 has seen Delcarmen bounce between the majors and AAA, but as of July he has shown improved control numbers and better command of his devastating curveball. As a result, he has moved ahead of Julian Tavarez and Rudy Seanez on the bullpen depth chart. Unless his control regresses, he has seen the last of AAA.
So far in 2007 he has been clutch in the bullpen, primarily in middle relief with the occasional setup appearance. He got his first career save when he came in at the last out of the 8th on July 23, 2007, against the Cleveland Indians with a 5-2 lead and a save opportunity, and retired four straight batters to end the game in a 6-2 Red Sox win. He has a 2.70 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP with 13 H, 20 SO and 7 BB in 18 appearances and 20 IP. He has given up runs in only three of his 18 appearances. In addition to his first career save, he has six holds, and no decisions yet this year.
