Overall Career
In his 10 seasons as a second baseman with the Red Sox and 12 games with the San Diego Padres, Marty Barrett racked up 3378 games played, with a batting average of .278, OBP of .337 and a SLG AVG of .383. What made Marty one of the best no. 2 hole hitters of the time, was his incredibly low SO rate. In 1986, a career year for Marty, he only struck out 31 times in 652 at bats. However, with gut wrenching irony, Marty made the last out of the 1986 World Series with a swinging strike 3 call.
His postseason efforts in 1986 will long live in Red Sox fans memories. Marty made his way into the records books breaking the major league record for hits in the postseason by batting .400 with 24 hits in 14 postseason games (a record which was previously set by Thurman Munson).
Barrett's Moments in the Sun
- MVP - 1986 American League Championship Series
- Led the American League for three consecutive years (1986-1988) for most sacrifice hits.
Trivia
- Marty Barrett scored the winning run in Baseball's Longest Game
- On June 10, 1987, Marty Barrett and Ellis Burks both hit Grand Slams in a 15-4 routing of the Baltimore Orioles.
- Some of us Red Sox fans lived vicariously through Marty in 1995 when he sued his former boss and doctor (who just happened to have been the same person). In 1989, Marty's career ended abruptly when he tripped over first base while trying to avoid a tag out. The result of that mishap was a torn ACL. At the time, Dr. Arthur Pappas (part owner of the team and team doctor) diagnosed the injury as a torn cartilage. It was later determined by Dr. Richard Steadman that the injury was, in fact, the much more serious injury of a torn ACL. Marty won the suit and received a settlement of $2.4 million dollars.
- I met Marty Barrett in Winter Haven in 1987 (you could actually interact with the players back then). I was still lamenting the Sox loss of the World Series and Marty said to me, "Everyone wants to blame Buckner. It isn't him they should blame, it should have been me. I was hot at the time, I never should have struck out". Time heals all wounds Marty.
