Matt Goodson (born September 26, 1982 in Galveston, TX), was drafted by the Red Sox in the 23rd round of the 2004 Amateur Draft from the University of Texas. He is currently assigned to High-A Lancaster.

Scouting Report

  • Tall righty with great velocity and excellent command. Has four good pitches in his repertoire: a low-90s fastball, curve, slider, and a deceptive change. He was used primarily as a reliever at the University of Texas. Redshirted in 2003 and pitched for Galveston College in 2002. ~ SoxProspects.com

Amateur Career

During his senior year at Texas, Matt made 3 appearances, and ended the season with a 12.00 ERA, with 4 hits allowed and 4 ER.

Minor League Career

Matt's best season came in 2005 at Greenville, where he posted a record of 6 wins and 4 loses and a 2.76 ERA. He had 78.1 IP, gave up 60 hits, 24 ER and a BB/K of 3.00. For his efforts, he was voted as the GCL's 5th best prospect by Baseball America.

After starting 2006 on the DL with a muscle spasm in his back, Goodson pitched a career high 106 innings between Single-A Wilmington and Double-A Portland. He finished with a 3.92 ERA in 19 starts for the Blue Rocks and was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 24-30 when he went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 2 starts. He walked 42, struck out 67 and allowed 13 home runs in 96.1 innings at Wilmington. In his first taste at Double-A, Matt picked up 1 win with a 3.72 ERA, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts in 9.2 innings.
