Overall Career

Oakland

1989

  • Young pitched in Game 3 of the ALCS against Toronto. In his 1/3 IP, he walked Ernie Whitt and Kelly Gruber, before inducing the great Manny Lee to groundout. It was his only postseason appearance for Oakland or any other team.

Boston

Young pitched for the Red Sox from 1991 to 1992, and his timeline with the team was a regretable one.

1991 and 1992

  • Combined record of 3-11 over 24 starts. In that time, Young walked 95, struck out 126, while sporting a 4.91 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP.

Moments in the Sun

  • Named to the 1983 AL All Star Team and pitched a scoreless 8th inning facing Johnny Bench, Darrell Evans and Pedro Guerrero.
  • A member of the 1989 Oakland A's World Series Championship Team.
  • Pitched an 8 inning no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians on April 12, 1992 and proceeded to lose the game 2-1 after giving up 7 walks and 3 stolen bases.

Awards

  • American League All-Star (1983)

Achievements

  • After going 8-18 in 1990 with Seattle, in which he walked 107 and threw 16 WP over 225 IP, Young swindled a $4,533,334.00, 2-year contract out of the Red Sox in December 1990. The Red Sox released him before the 1993 season.

Trivia

  • Became the reliable mastabatory love object of former Red Sox GM Lou Gorman during the 1990 season after Young gave up an unearned run in 7 IP against the Red Sox on May 8, 1990. Young induced Gorman to climax on September 9, 1990 when he threw 7 innings, giving up 1 ER and picking up the win. We all wish Gorman could have quit him.
  • Young made his Major League debut on April 6, 1983 against the New York Yankees, while pitching for the Seattle Mariners. Young pitched 7 innings for the win, giving up 2 earned runs, striking out 4, while walking 2 and surrending 10 hits

Transactions

January 10, 1978: Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2nd round of the 1978 amateur draft, but did not sign.
  • June 3, 1980: Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2nd round of the 1980 amateur draft.
