Amateur Career
Went 10-0 with a 0.99 ERA in 11 starts during his senior year at Henry County HS (GA). Selected by the Red Sox in the 12th round of the of the 2004 Amateur Draft. Signed on August 24, 2004 prior to enrolling at the University of North Carolina.
Scouting Report
Big lefty with a three pitch arsenal: low-90s fastball (capable of touching mid-90s), curveball, and changeup. Came out of HS with a fastball in the low 90s, projected to increase velocity. Instead, he appears to have lost speed on the pitch, leaving him pitching mostly in the high 80s. He nibbles, resulting in a high walk ratio, and has not shown an ability to strike batters out.
Pro Career
Was assigned to the class A Greenville Bombers to start 2005 where he went 6-5 with a 3.90 ERA in 21 appearances (20 starts), pitching 92.1 innings and striking out 52 (5.07 K/9). Rozier did however struggle with his control, 4.78 BB/9. So far in 2006, once again with Greenville, Rozier has seen his strikeout rate improve to 6.84 K/9 while also modestly improving his control.
Rozier started the 2007 season with the Lancaster JetHawks
Trivia
- Turned down a football scholarship at the University of North Carolina to play for the Sox.
- His bonus of $1.575 million was the most ever given to a non-draft-and-follow taken after the 10th round, was also the third-largest bonus given in Red Sox history, following only first round picks Rick Asadoorian ($1.7255 million, 1999 Amateur Draft) and Adam Everett ($1.725 million, 1998 Amateur Draft).
- Considered a high-round talent, but fell in the draft due to the presense of Scott Boras as his agent. Additionally it was also rumored that he would ultimately choose football over baseball.
