Overall Career

Cummings was drafted in the 1st round (29th overall pick) of the 1990 amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins. After breaking in with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1993, Cummings played more than 100 games in a season only once, in 1997, when he split time with the Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies. As the Phillies starting center fielder, Cummings hit .303 with 1 home run, 16 doubles and 23 RBI in 63 games. He also hit .442 with runners in scoring position and made only one error as the Phillies went 44-33 with him in the lineup.

The Boston Red Sox claimed Cummings off waivers in 1998, and was used as a fifth outfielder and DH. In 67 games with Boston, Cummings hit .283/.381/.475 with a career high five home runs. He was also the AL’s leading pinch-hitter, going 9-for-26 with 2 homers.

Following surgery to repair a torn ligament in his wrist, Cummings was released by the Red Sox during spring training in 1999, though would return to Boston the following year in a trade deadline deal that sent Hector De Los Santos to the Minnesota Twins.

After winning a World Series ring with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, Cummings toiled in the minor leagues before resurfacing with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2004. He saw his last action in the major leagues with the Orioles in 2005.
