Overall Career

Originally selected by the California Angels in the 17th round of the 1994 amateur draft, Holtz spent eight years in the Angels organization before signing with the Oakland Athletics as a free agent in 2002. Holtz appeared in 16 games with Oakland, but was released midseason due to poor performance, and spent the rest of the year as a member of the San Diego Padres.

Holtz spent 2003 with Nashville in the Pittsburgh organization and 2004 with Durham in the Tampa Bay organization. In 2005, he was 0-1 with a 4.37 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 24.2 innings of work for the Yokohama BayStars of the Japan Central League.

In 2006 Holtz was a non-roster invitee to Boston's major league spring training camp after signing as a free agent on February 1, 2006. Holtz began the season at Pawtucket, where in 11 relief appearances with the PawSox he picked up 3 saves and 24 strikeouts in 18.2 innings, holding left-handed hitters to an .091 average. The lefthander was called up to Boston on May 9 to be their LOOGY. In three relief outings for Boston, Holtz pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks for a 16.20 ERA. He was placed on the 15-day Disabled List on May 19 (retroactive to May 17), designated for assignment on June 19 and finally released on June 26.

Holtz announced his retirement from baseball on January 26, 2007. In 353 relief appearances, he compiled a 16-19 record with three saves and a 4.76 ERA.
