Overall Career

McFarlane came up through the Royals system, and in 1988 was the first rookie catcher to start opening day for Kansas City in 19 seasons. He had his best season in 1993, batting .273 withj 20 HR and 67 RBI. McFarlane is the Royals franchise leader in games caught. He came to the Red Sox for the post-strike 1995 season. The 1995 Red Sox would win the division and go on to the 1995 ALDS. McFarlane was the teams primary catcher with 115 games behind the plate, Scott Hatteberg served as his backup. Otherwise known as a good defensive catcher, he set a club record with 26 passsed balls (which, coincidentally was Tim Wakefield's first season with Boston). He hit 15 HR and drove in 51 RBI, though he would only hit .225.


Moment in the Sun

  • In his only postseason appearance he batted .333 (3 for 9) with an RBI for the Red Sox in the 3 game sweep.
  • McFarlane's grand slam against Oakland in 1995 was the 101st hit in the majors that season, setting a new MLB record at the time


Transactions

McFarlane signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox, and returned to the Royals in 1996. He was only traded once, in 1998 to Oakland for Shane Mack
