Amateur Career

Mitch went to the College of Southern Idaho, where he put up a line of .293/.422/.359 with 4 extra base hits and 4 walks, but 24 strikeouts in his freshman season. It was enough to get him noticed by the Red Sox, who picked him in the last round of the 2003 draft, as a draft and follow candidate. Mitch improved his power and patience in his sophomore season, putting up a .291/.427/.404 line, with 13 extra base hits, 19 walks and 27 strikeouts.

Pro Career

The Red Sox signed Mitch prior to the 2004 Amateur Draft, and assigned him to the GCL Red Sox. He bounced between the GCL and the Augusta Greenjackets that season, generally being the person the Sox called upon to become the 3rd catcher in Augusta when injuries occured. He showed some good signs, but was mostly woeful with the bat; Hitting .236/.300/.327 in the GCL and .192/.284/.269 in Augusta. He did hit 5 doubles and 2 HRs in 2004, walking 8 times but striking out 50 times.

The next season, the Sox started Mitch with the Greenville Bombers, where he again struggled with the bat, going .165/.302/.365 with 13 extra base hits and 16 walks... but striking out 49 times. When Kelly Shoppach was called up to Boston, he was promoted to Pawtucket, where he played in 4 games and received 4 At Bats. He failed to reach base as a member of the Pawsox, and struck out 3 times. He was eventually demoted down to the Lowell Spinners, where he finished the season with a line of .226/.299/.435, with 10 extra base hits, 4 walks and another 55 Ks.

His 2006 season started late, as he had mononucleosis during the offseason. Once it did start, he was placed back in Greenville and joined the three headed catching rotation (with Mark Wagner and Mike Leonard). He missed a week and a half in June of 2006 with a wrist injury.

Scouting Report

Mitch Stachowsky is a catcher with a good defensive reputation and potential plus power. However, at this point his hitting is out of the three true outcomes scenario: HRs, Walks/HBPs, and Strikeouts. This is his third season in the Red Sox organization, but he is still only 21 and is younger that his Greenville teamate, Mark Wagner.

His youth and position will likely keep him with the organization for a while, but he does need to show some offensive competence if he expects to become a Major League Player.
