Peter Edward Rose, Sr. (Charlie Hustle) was born on April 14, 1941 in Cincinnati, OH. Sources say Pete actually had an in-utero bet with his mother as to what day he would be born. Pete lost that bet which would be the first of many. Pete's father, Harry Rose, played semi-professional football and greatly influenced Pete's athletic life and enrollment in baseball.

Overall Career

Pete Rose was considered one of the great hitters in baseball history. He won the National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1963 with the Cincinnati Reds. His rookie year, New York Yankees pitcher Whitey Ford nicknamed Rose "Charlie Hustle" due to his hard-working efforts he put forth every game.

Rose batted over .300 every year with the Reds every year from 1965 to 1978 with the exception of 1974 when he bat .284. Rose's career ended at .303/.375/.409 in 24 seasons.

Career Highlight

  • On September 11, 1985 Rose broke the MLB all-time record for most career hits with 4,192. The record was previously held by Ty Cobb with 4,191 hits. Rose and Cobb are the only players in MLB history to hit over 4,000 hits. Rose ended his career with 4,256 hits.

Career Lowlight

  • Rose managed his beloved Cincinnati Reds from 1985 to 1989. In 1989, he accepted a lifetime ban from baseball for gambling on Reds games. The ban included denial of induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Publicly, Rose denied his gambling for years. Eventually, however, Rose admitted to gambling on his team "every night."
