Overall Career

Drafted by the Cincinatti Reds in the 3rd round of the 1986 draft, Jefferson made his major league debut with the Reds on May 18, 1991. After merely a few at bats, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians that same season. Following two decent seasons as a platoon backup and pinch hitter, he was traded in the winter of the 1993 to the Seattle Mariners for Omar Vizquel. Jefferson only played one season for Seattle. In 1994, Jefferson was granted free agency and signed with the Boston Red Sox on April 9, 1995.

Jefferson had a few productive seasons with the Red Sox, primarily in the capacity of a left handed component of a platoon. Jefferson's most productive season with Boston was 1996, when he hit .347 (with an OBP of .388 and a SLG % of .593) in 122 games.

Moment in the Sun

At one point in the 1996 season, Jefferson was leading the American League in batting, with a .358 average. When Mike Stanley was traded to the New York Yankees for Tony Armas Jr., Jefferson gained the opportunity to claim the AL batting title. He did not, however, failing to accumulate enough at bats to qualify. If he did, he would have finished third in the league with a .347 average, behind Alex Rodriguez and Frank Thomas.
