Scouting Report

  • Speedy and athletic left-handed hitting outfielder. Makes good contact, above average plate discipline. Drives through the ball well. Some power, but he needs to build up strength if he wants to make it as a corner outfielder at the MLB level. Raw with a high ceiling, still playing above his age level. Intelligent. Plays both right field and left field solidly. ~ SoxProspects.com

Moment in the Sun

  • March 18, 2008: Losing a fly ball with the bases loaded in the final Spring Training game at City of Palms Park in 2008. The Sox were leading 3-1, and his gaffe allowed 3 runs to score, costing the team the game 4-3. Quite literally, his moment in the sun. Later that same inning Engel threw out a runner at home plate to end the inning.

Amateur Career

  • Engel hit .431 with six home runs, 37 RBI, 36 runs, six doubles, five triples and 10 stolen bases as a junior in 2004.
  • During his senior year, Engel had had six home runs among his first nine hits.

Minor League Career

  • 2005: Engel was selected by Boston in the 5th round of the 2005 Amateur Draft and assigned to the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox. Reid hit only 0.233 (24-for-103) over 27 games, collecting 2 home runs, 8 RBI, and 9 runs scored.
  • 2006: Began the season with the GCL Red Sox, but recieved a promotion to short season Lowell after hitting 0.200 (4-for-20) over the course of 6 games. Hit .251 with 26 RBI in 56 games with short-season Single-A Lowell, but struck out 48 times while only collecting 10 free passes.
  • 2007: Earned South Atlantic League All-Star honors in his full season Single-A debut, batting 0.292 (120-for-411) with 20 doubles, 6 triples, 9 homers, 60 runs scored and 49 RBI in 112 games for Greenville.
