Overall Career

Richard Leo Gedman Jr. (born September 26, 1959 in Worcester, MA) made his Major League debut in 1980, by pinch-hitting for Yaz. Gedman had decent rookie year ('81), and becomes one of baseball's most promising young catchers. Injuries, inconsistency, the passed ball wild pitch, and "Big 8 Holdout/Collusion" of 1987 sparked his early decline. Retired at age 34. Was very happy when the Sox won in 2004.

Awards

  • 1981 Sporting News Rookie of the Year
  • 2-time American League All-Star (1985 - 1986)

Moments in the Sun

  • September 18, 1985: Gedman hits for the cycle as the Sox crush the Jays, 17-1.

Trivia

  • Was high school teammates with J.P. Riccardi, Jr.
  • Caught the first nine innings of the Baseball's Longest Game (Pawtucket v. Rochester, 4/18/81)
  • Co-holder of most put-outs by a catcher in a game (20, 04/29/1986, aka: "Roger's 20-K Game")
  • When with St Louis in 1991, he was hampered by, of all things, a poorly measured and filled contact lens prescription. He couldn't see the rotation of the ball!
  • He is currently manager of the Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League.
