Overall Career
Runelvys Hernandez signed with the Kansas City Royals as a non-drafted free agent in 1997. He made his major league debut for the Royals on July 15, 2002 following an All-Star season at Double-A Wichita where he posted an 8-3 record with a 2.71 ERA. In 2003 Hernandez was Kansas City's Opening Day starter and went on to become the Major League's first four-game winner, going 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA in April, though faltered as he tried to pitch through elbow inflammation, and his season ended after 16 starts.
After missing the entire 2004 season with Tommy John surgery, Hernandez led the Royals with eight wins and ranked third with 159 2/3 innings, both career bests, in 2005, despite posting a 5.52 ERA. Hernandez was released by the the Royals following a disastrous season in 2006 in which he struggled with conditioning and inconsistency. He signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox on December 22, 2006. In his 4-year career to date, Hernandez is a sub .500 pitcher (25-33) with a bloated ERA (5.38), high WHIP (1.52) and walks as many (3.7 BB/9) as he strikes out (4.78 K/9).
Failing to make the team out of spring training, Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. He made seven starts for the PawSox before choosing to exercise an out clause in his contract with the Red Sox when he was not on the big-league roster as of June 1. At Pawtucket, Hernandez compiled an 0-3 record with a 3.06 ERA in 35.1 innings. He walked 12, struck out 24, and gave up 5 home runs. Opponents hit .233 against him.
On June 5, Runelvys signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees.

- One of only three Royals pitchers to walk nine batters in a game. Hernandez achieved the feat on August 6, 2006 against the Minnesota Twins.
- On September 12, 2006, Hernandez brawled with catcher John Buck in the dugout during a game against the Cleveland Indians. After striking out Ryan Garko with two runners on base to end the third inning, Hernandez jogged to the dugout, turned and pointed at Buck and began yelling. The two players charged each other and began throwing punches before being separated by teammates and coaches.
