Overall Career

Drafted by the New York Mets in the 23rd round in the 1994 draft, Sauerbeck made his major league debut with Pittsburgh in 1999 after the Pirates obtained him via the Rule 5 draft. Halfway through the 2003 season, the Red Sox traded Brandon Lyon and Anastacio Martinez to Pittsburgh for Sauerbeck and Mike Gonzalez.

Two weeks prior to the start of the 2004 season, Sauerbeck signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians. After missing the entire season due to an injury, Cleveland exercised their club option for 2005, when Sauerbeck appeared in 58 games with an ERA of 4.04. Before the 2006 season, Cleveland signed Scott to a new one-year deal but released him in mid-June. 5 days later he was signed by the Oakland A's.

On July 11, 2006, Sauerbeck pleaded guilty in Avon Lake Municipal Court to obstruction of official business and permitting someone intoxicated to drive his car. He was fined $1,750, sentenced to 30 days in jail and ordered to perform community service in the form of speeches to students in three local school districts about alcohol use. The 30 day jail sentence was suspended, provided Sauerbeck has no similar offenses for a year.

On February 2, 2007, the Houston Astros signed Sauerbeck to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
