Seattle Rainiers

  • League: Pacific Coast League
  • Red Sox Affiliate: 1961-1964
  • Stadium: Sicks' Seattle Stadium

Background

In 1961, the Boston Red Sox purchased the PCL Seattle Rainiers from Emil Sick, who had owned the club since 1938, moving their AAA affiliation from Minnesota. The Rainiers, who were used to being in contention under the Sick Regime, did not fare particularly well under Red Sox guidance. Of course, the Sox were having their own problems.

Prior to the 1965 season, the Sox sold the team to the Los Angeles Angels and moved their AAA team back to Toronto.

While the Rainiers ceased to exist in 1965 (the Angels changed the name to, ummm, the Angels)... The PCL Tacoma franchise brought the name back to life in 1995, in part as an homage to the Seattle Rainiers. Coincidently, the change occured during the first year of affiliation with the Seattle Mariners.
