Background
Song signed with the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent for $800,000 in 1999 after leading his high school in Korea to a national title. Beginning in 1999 with the GCL Red Sox, Song posted a 2.30 ERA in 13 games with a 5-5 record. He pitched 54.2 innings and posted a K/BB ratio of 3.05.
In 2002, Song was traded to Montreal in a deal involving Cliff Floyd coming to the Red Sox. While pitching for the Harrisburg Senators, Montreal's Double-A affiliate in 2003, Song tossed a no-hitter in a 2-1 victory over the Erie SeaWolves. He allowed two walks while striking out four for the first no-hitter in Senators' modern franchise history. Battling injury, Song continued to play baseball at three minor-league levels, but has yet to make it to the Majors. He was known as a power pitcher, with a fastball in the mid-90's and a sharp curveball.
Over the past 6 years, Song has played at 3 different levels, with 3 different clubs and 13 minor league teams. He has posted a 3.68 ERA over that time period, as well as a record of 51-37. In 2006, Song played in 27 games for Wichita, the Double-A affiliation of the Texas Rangers.
Awards
- 2001 Boston Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year.
Scouting Report
From Sox Prospects: "Song is a power pitcher with excellent command. His fastball reaches the mid 90s. He has taught himself a curveball that gives him a second above-average pitch. He is strong and speaks English well. Song tends to rely on his fastball and will need to throw his curve more often at higher levels. Currently his weakest pitch, his changeup needs more work as well."
Trivia
- Song was the first minor leaguer to ever appear in three Futures Games.
