Overview
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) consists of six teams which play a 50 game season, followed by a best-of-seven between the two best teams to determine the CPBL champion. The most successful team to this point has been the Brother Elephants, who have won six championships, while three teams have yet to win a championship.
Gambling scandals almost destroyed the CPBL, most notably the "Black Eagles" scandal in 1997 wherein several players on the China Times Eagles were convicted of throwing games for money; this led not only to the banning of many players from the league but also the dissolution of the China Times Eagles baseball franchise.
While the CPBL was founded around 1990, the Taiwan Major League (TML) was formed as a rival upstart league in 1997 in response to the scandal surrounding the CPBL at the time. The relationship between the two leagues was much like that of the AL and NL at the start, with players being lured from one league to the other. The leagues finally found peaceful coexistence when they merged in 2003.
While a couple of Taiwanese players have made the majors, none have played for the Red Sox.
