In the episode Homer at the Bat, the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant softball team lines up to play the Shelbyville Nuclear Power Plant softball team. Mr. Burns hires Wade Boggs, Jose Canseco, Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey Jr., Steve Sax, Ozzie Smith, Don Mattingly, Mike Scioscia, and Darryl Strawberry to play on the Springfield team. Terry Cashman also parodied himself. But the pros all succumb to various strange nuclear related ailments, leaving the big game up to Homer.
Other players have been featured on the Simpsons as well over the years; Like Mark McGwire and Randy Johnson. Homer also was a mascot for the town's minor league team, the Springfield Isotopes.
- A name-the-team contest in 2003 yielded the Albuquerque Isotopes after the beloved Springfield team, and now is the Marlins' AAA affiliate. They dawn the same logo as well.
