Overall Career
Thomas Edward John Jr. probably isn't as well known for his pitching career as he is for Tommy John surgery, the procedure peformed on his arm on September 25, 1974 by Los Angeles Dodgers team physician Dr. Frank Jobe. As to John's career, he pitched 26 years in the majors for six teams, winning 288 games and posting a 3.34 ERA.

Trivia
- Except for Jim Kaat, Bert Blyleven, 19th century pitcher Tony Mullane, and currently ineligible Tom Glavine, all of John's most similar pitchers are in the Hall of Fame.
- With fellow ex-Dodger Jerry Reuss, set the record for oldest lefty-lefty pitching matchup on May 2, 1988. The record stood until it was broken three times in 2007. The current record was set on July 21, 2007 by Jamie Moyer and David Wells.
