Overall Career

Drafted by the New York Mets in 1982, Gardner led the International League in saves at Tidewater in 1984 and 1985, but failed to earn a spot on the Mets' pitching staff and was dealt to Boston with Calvin Schiraldi, La Schelle Tarver and John Christensen for Bob Ojeda, Tom McCarthy, John Mitchell, and Chris Bayer. He pitched only one inning in 1986 before tearing cartilage in his right shoulder, but his 10 saves in 1987 led the Red Sox. After three more seasons as a Boston swingman, he faded from the big-league scene, appearing briefly with the San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals in 1991.

In an eight-season career, Gardner posted an 18-30 record with a 4.90 ERA and 14 saves in 466.1 innings pitched.

Gardner's Moments in the Sun

  • Gardner's best season came in 1988 when he posted career highs in wins (8), strikeouts (106), ERA (3.50) and innings pitched (149).

Trivia

  • Gardner was arrested for hitting his wife at the Red Sox's Baltimore hotel in August of 1989. Gardner was allowed to make his next start, two days later.
