You know, that's the first time I've ever seen a picture of Meter. I love the Count Dracula hairline.

That's why I posted it. Not too many people know what this guy looks like, so I bet he doesn't get half the shit he should get when he's out and around town.

The widow's peek is just priceless. As they say, a face for radio.

I've been listening to the 1510 morning show on my commute. At least they talk Boston sports and they broadcast actual content more than 9 minutes per half hour.

I listen to this show only when there's a big story in the wind or for the interviews with Schilling and Doc Rivers. I usually can't take more than a few minutes.

This is a group formed in hell. Dennis is a pompous ass. Callahan is a mean spirited, name calling, cheap shot artist. Meterparel reminds me of something I'd wipe off my shoe.

So far this replacement week.
The interview Monday with Schilling by Rook, Halloran and Meter was good. Covered his rehab, Hansen's pitching woes, and Bonds. Max substance.
Paraphrasing.
Lots of rehab just to the arm back to baseline before throwing a pitch.
Hansen has the stuff but with a big kid, mechanically a lot is going on so finding the right adjustments can be hard. Basically, it's up to Hansen to get done.
And Bonds is a tough call. Schilling not around the club enough now to hazard a guess on how it would pan out. IIRC. He put it this way. Is putting up with the hoopla worth it to potentially improve the chances of getting a third WS Trophy in five years?

Today, the Joel Sherman interview was good, got into with Curran on a -What if Joe G ask you about meeting with your editors? Sherman was like "Well, what ya wanted to know?" and preceded to comment on his meeting last week with his editors on new ways to cover the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry. Hey, annoying Joe G is one of the new ways.
And so far less Meter equaled better Meter.

Jon Meterparel and noted baseball analyst Scott Zolak (anchoring the show while D & C are vacationing, or "summering" in their native WASPese) have just spent nearly an entire show debating the overratedness of Jason Varitek's pitching staff handling abilities using catcher's ERA. CERA. Pronounced "serra".

Baseball Prospectus should think about bringing these two SABR geniuses aboard.

Haven't listened to these two guys in weeks, so I fired up the old radio on the way to work to hear Callahan yelling at some guy about the oil companies and how it "doesn't hurt anyone" for the oil companies to dig where ever they want. Of course, Callahan's version of someone being hurt is how much something costs, but whatever. Before the caller started to debate, KKKallahan said, "And don't start talking about the environment. You outdoors extremists have gone too far!"

In this month's Esquire, Stephen Colbert writes about how old, rich white guys are getting the shaft these days. I think that Callahan was at his barber shop, read the article and didn't realize that Colbert was joking. I think that I may start listening to him the way I watch "The Colbert Report" and just buy into the fact that KKKallahan is a character and one to be laughed at.

Did anyone catch Monday's show around 730? They were talking about Hancock, The Hulk and Iron Man and "how come there isn't a movie out there with all the super heroes together" This went on for 20 minutes. I almost wanted to call in for the first time to explain about DC and Marvel and how you just can't put all comic books heroes together just like that.

Exactly! :colbert:

Well, that and they spent nearly 30 minutes talking about comic book movies and how Superman could stop a train vs. how Hancock could

This morning, just before 9, they began talking about golf. Apparently, John Dennis likes golf, because he actually put some effort and energy into the segment. It was nice, hearing these two talk about sports with something approaching fandom and passion for the game. Of course, they moved back to baseball and John Dennis contributed the passion and intensity of paint-drying for the remainder of the show.

When the host cares, it's good radio. Even if you disagree with their POV, at least there is something worth listening to. But since Dennis is only excited by golf and Callahan is only excited by politics, I'm wondering why they host the drive-time SPORTS RADIO PROGRAM. Too often, this show is unlistenable NOT because Callahan is a right-wing dickwad or Dennis is a sanctimonious windbag, but because they just don't care about SPORTS.

At the end of the show, I caught myself wondering how much I would listen to this duo if they were on WRKO or 96.9 in the mornings, doing EXACTLY their WEEI show. And the answer is "probably more". Because then, at least, it would be a show about politics with sports included, which is what Callahan really cares about. This show is on the wrong station and it's marketed the wrong way and so EVERYBODY (hosts, listeners, advertisers) gets the short end of the stick.

That is the understatement of the year. I've heard stories that Dennis is out the door at 10:01 and is on the golf course by 10:08 every single day.

BTW, there was some great baseball discussion today. Apparently Theo Epstein should "stick it" to Manny Ramirez and tell him to "pound salt (sic)" when it comes to the end of the year. Then the Sox should get Mark Texeiria, Pat Burrell or Bobby I'm afraid of walls as a free agent or trade for Matt Holiday. Seems like a solid, rational plan. That Gerry Callahan is a hoot.

This observation is about a commercial on WEEI, currently in regular rotation. It is a "McGruff the Crime Dog" commercial, where some kid is singing a jingle on fire safety (or something like that).

It is, without hyperbole, the most annoying, grating commercial I've ever heard in my life. I'd rather have They Might Be Giants playing D&D songs in my office for 10 hours, than listen to this commercial one more time. It makes me want to start lighting elementary schools on fire.

I had to listen this AM after J.D. Drew was All-Star MVP. I was sure that Callahole would find a way to piss all over it. He did not disappoint. Did you know that Drew is on a pace for only 99 RBI? What a hateful little asshole.

I turned it on today as I was getting ready for work. The first thing I hear is "Manny threw down a 64 year old man" at the point I turned it right off.

The should rename this show the "Negativity Zone"

Just so you guys know: if you bring your kids to the ballpark and you don't boo Manny Ramirez, you are telling your kids that it's OK to assault old people. Just wanted to clear that up, in case you missed today's show.

Just turn off the radio. Christ, their bashing Manny is pretty much the most predictable thing in the entire world. No need to get worked up about it, honestly.

It's like asking a dog not to lick its balls. Not gonna happen.

D&C are miserable human beings. Turn off the radio and spare yourself the indignation.

I should. The thing is, I enjoy hating them. I disagree with just about 99% of what they say, on both sports and non-sports topics.

I learned it from my old man. When I went to work with him, he would listen to Imus in the morning, then Rush in the afternoon. They would say things that went against every fiber of his being, and he would get pissed off, but deep down I think he enjoyed it. As the kid in the 1980's anti-drug commercial says "I learned it from watching you!"

That's the issue we have in Boston. If you want to listen to a locally produced morning-drive show, it's either 'Dennis and Callahan,' or 'Matty in the Morning.' There is simply no alternative. Of course people don't change the dial from EEI. There's nothing to change the dial to!

Let's say there was an alternative. A morning-drive show where the two hosts talked intelligently about sports, and didn't spew the venom that 'Dennis and Callahan' do towards local figures, and athletes. Would you listen to that show?

If your answer is "no," then sadly, the powers at WEEI may be right. The reason why you continually listen to 'Dennis and Callahan,' is because you can't turn it off. Not because, there's no alternative.

I personally enjoy some of EEI's programming (Normally 'Dale and Holley,' 'The Big Show' when bumbling fools aren't the co-hosts), but the reason why I'll tune into 'D&C,' is the fact that there's no other choice, if you want to listen to a morning talk show.

He'd look like Eddie Munster, but Eddie had more color in his face.
And apparently vastly more gray matter in his charming skull.

It should be remembered that our local clown a few years back was pimping Manny Ramirez to the Mets for Mike Cameron and pocket change.

Either Meter & Co. are morons or simply giving 110% for the pissed off white male demo, only pretending to be serious. With that in mind, I'm a bit surprised they are channeling Manny today instead of Rev Jackson's use of the N word.

Both of them? Aren't Rush and Imus on opposite ends of the politcal spectrum?
I wouldn't say that, although I'm not familiar with the I-Man's politics these days. But, I don't think he leans heavily in one direction like Rush does. Imus would do other things that would draw his ire.

I got in my car late today, after "Headlines", and was hopeful that I would hear actual sports talk, even if with the usual stupidity and negativity. And Callahan tempted me, coming back from the commercial break with the question, "What is the worst trade of all time?"

Alas, that was a lead-in for a lengthy discussion of Israel and Hezbollah trading dead bodies for prisoners.

Other than Abreu, those are all white guys. You telling me you're suprised?

Also, if you are looking for a local morning show, Lou and Mike on 1510 -- while their voices are annoying, really weren't that bad. They stuck to sports, their analysis didn't suck. And almost no commercial breaks, since nobody advertises on that station. That said, I have no idea if they're still on -- I work from home during the summer so I don't do the morning drive.

This morning I had them on in the car for about 20 minutes. During that time Callahan did the following:

!. Claimed he has never bought a lottery ticket and everyone who ever did is an idiot.

2. Praised oil companies.

3. Claimed that the only time he's ever used the "N" word was in quoting "Pulp Fiction".

The last one is particularly ludicrous. Just picture him and his white trash buddies back in Chelmsford and try to imagine a conversation without it.

I don't mean to be a dick, man, but throughout these eei threads you always seem to bash D&C but always keep tuning in. You know the crap theyre going to say, why even bother listening?

Dale&Holley are my drive-time show, so I guess I can't say with any authority, but either D&C are worse than silence, or they're better. Either way, you keep tuning into them and getting pissed off. Just skip over it on the dial :)

I strongly feel that 'Dennis and Callahan's' success is largely attributed to the fact of there being no worthwhile alternative. When was the last time a caller, or emailer praised them? When was the last time you heard anybody praise them? It appears that almost everybody in the city cannot stand them. But yet, people listen, because it's either them, or "choose FM disc jockey here."

It's going to be the same as when Massachusetts elected their first black governor, everything is going to be his fault.

Like when Deval Patrick went to try and talk to different Hollywood types rather than go to the Celtics parade, Callahan was all over him. "What a phony. He'd rather hob-knob with celebrities rather than enjoy a parade. I bet he doesn't even know the Celtics won!"

When a caller tried to correct him and told him that Patrick probably had this appointment earlier and that he was doing so in order to bring in more money to the state, Callahan said, "You can bet he'd be around if they were voting on his casino package, which I may add, didn't pass. Har, har, har."

Of course, if Patrick was at the parade KKKallahan would've been pissing all over him saying that he should be working and trying to get some new tax revenue into the state. He's such a miserable fucking prick, who cares who's at the fucking parade. Thinking about him makes me want to punch him in that gigantic forehead.

Good heavens, what are they going to do when we have a Negro president in a few months?
i'd guess the same thing that fox news, hannity, rush, o'reilly, etc will do- have a fun time knocking every single move he makes. like with bill clinton, only with less fat intern oral.

They are on fire this morning.

Did you guys know that nobody criticizes Manny for his hair, because he isn't white? If Manny was white, the fans and media would be all over him for his long hair. But, since he's not white, everybody is afraid to talk about it. (Hypothetically speaking, if we had a white CF with long crazy hair, everybody would be criticizing him for it, right? Oh, wait...)

Also, D&C have figured out the reason why Buchholz is struggling and Beckett hasn't been himself. It's those goddamn necklaces.

Right. Because people were all over Johnny Damon's shit. And to bolster their case, they cited Larry Johnson as the only one with the guts to criticize Manny's hair. The guy is hitting about .300, leading the team in homers and runs batted in, but his hair! The horror!

I heard these two clowns today and BTW, when you reference "Snigglets" like Gerry Callahan did this morning, you probably should be sent packing. Fucking Snigglets. What's next Gerry, a few minutes on why airplane peanut packages are sooooooo hard to open?
