There was a kid on my brother's little league team who played catcher and the guy would be grievously injured (yelling, crying, shaking it off) like four times a game. Some of the parents gave him a lot of credit because he was toughing it out but I was like "wait a second, why is he crying every time the tiniest thing happens? How can he suffer that many injuries and be healthy like 15 minutes later"

I'm at that point with Roethlisberger. How often does someone get carted off and come back in in the same game? Paul Pierce that once and who else?

I agree. When he was carted off, I knew he would come back in.

Although I did think he might have separated his shoulder on the replay...still he does do the grandstand injury thing. He was carted off 2, 3 times this year and still going.

Hasselbeck on EEI this morning said the same thing. He is a pretty tough guy, but there's some drama with the injuries.

Here's an interesting tidbit.

At least one of the remaining four AFC teams has played in the AFC Championship Game in:
  • Each of the last five years.
  • 9 of the last 10 years (and 11 of the last 12).
  • 12 of the last 15 years (and 12 of the last 14).
  • 16 of the last 20 years.
  • 19 of the last 25 years (and 19 of the last 24).
  • 23 of the last 30 years (and 24 of the last 31).
So, only seven seasons in the last three decades without one of these four.

And excluding the Chiefs, one of the other three teams has played in the AFCC in all but 8 seasons in the last 30 years.

The Patriots, Steelers, and Broncos have represented the AFC in the Super Bowl 14 out of the last twenty years.

FYI: The other four representatives to have been in the big game for the junior conference are a combined 24-40 this year (Ravens 2x, Colts 2x, Raiders, and Titans).

I don't recall him ever being cartred off and coming back in the same game, but does anyone here recall the drama that used to chronically surround Jim Harbaugh's play? He'd get hit and writhe around and look dead one play and then be slinging 50 yard throws on the next. Like all of the time. That fucker was (and still is) so annoying.

Most of the drama queen stuff with Ben has been between games. When he gets dinged up during a game he'll oversell it in the days leading up to the next game, and then go play football. But he is still a tough bastard as well. Coming back too soon from a high ankle sprain which made him run most plays from a pistol formation, having his nose broken during a game and finishing the game, coming back from that shoulder injury against the Bengals, lots of examples. He's sometimes just a little too interested in making sure everyone knows how many injuries he's overcoming.

I'm going to be shocked if Brown doesn't play. It's the playoffs and I don't really see the NFL's concussion protocol as a thing that the teams take seriously or can't get around if they really want to. There is also the chance that he does legitimately pass the protocol by Sunday, but even if he doesn't then I'd expect the Steelers to find a way to get to him on the field.

BTW, if he has anything close to a serious concussion, there is strong chance that he can't play. As in he can't be on his feet or in a brightly lit room or a noisy area for long without keeling over.

I do believe that Ben is a tough guy, and that he likes to be seen as such. But he plainly wasn't feigning anything at the end of that game. He did not throw a pass much over 15 yards when he came back in. The notion that he would method act while his back up jeopardized the game doesn't merit a response.

The one post-game report that seemed credible to me was yesterday's that Ben would be "severely limited". Based on what I saw Saturday night, that makes sense.

To someone standing outside of this universe, that luck would include the Pats just pissing away the Eagles game. If there is a monster, our team helped build it.

Yup, hard to complain about Broncos luck when the Pats controlled their own destiny for so much of the season. Any wins out of Phi/NYJ/Mia and we would be hosting the ruined Steelers, so now we have to lie in the bed we made.

Hoo-hoo-hoo hoosier land.
If Edleman is healthy and the line blocks, they should win anywhere, including Denver. If those conditions aren't met, they'd probably lose at home anyway. Health seems so so much more important right now than where the games are played.

Agreed, but it's still painful to recall that some of that Broncos luck involved the Pats being effectively screwed out of the win in Denver that would have locked down home field advantage.

Yet you give it a response--but of course, in your trademark style, completely mischaracterize what was actually said.

No one says he wasn't hurt; the point is that every time he gets nicked up he acts like he's suffered a major injury. Then they publicize how terrible the injury (he discloses on a radio bit that he has torn ligaments too!). Then he plays the next game while everybody gushes about what a tough guy this fucking rapist is while 31 other starting quarterbacks play with all kinds of injuries but rarely say a thing.

Right, but what about: Edelman is healthy and the line blocks, but then Gronk and Hightower get injured in-game and a bunch of crappy calls go against us that wouldn't go against us at home and we lose in OT? Just, you know, hypothetically...

I wish that it were so binary.

If the ligaments are not torn when he said they were, he's bought himself a problem. And the team. But then again, there is the Rooney Rule and Rooney rules.

I will be very surprised if he is not severely limited, and pleasantly surprised if the Steelers survive their trip to Denver.

Amen. I'm now viewing this more as an opportunity to crush their fans' nascent spirits and rip their hearts out, Temple of Doom style. Much like the 2004 AFCCG in Pittsburgh. "Oh, you have a fancy 15-1 team? Who beat us earlier in the year, thus edging us out for HFA? That's nice." Same with 2001 I guess. We have yet to avenge 2005.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves on two counts.

Why is he saying anything on the radio as to the extend of his injuries, specifically torn ligaments; can you imagine the shit fit Belichick would throw if Brady went on the air and read off the list of his injuries before a playoff game, or any player for that matter.

Jesus; shut up Ben.

That's our AFC North Tomlin and Harbaugh celebrate. By all means Shazier and Burfict your opponents. But don't collect and utilize Intel -- shit that would be unmanly. So feel free to give it away.

FWIW, Big Ben saying he has an AC joint injury and torn ligaments in his shoulder is a redundant comment. You can't have an AC joint sprain without tearing or partially tearing ligaments in your shoulder. He may have a higher grade injury so maybe his docs explained the typically associated adjacent ligament injuries as well, but that'd just be a guess (and to be honest I'd be impressed if he is playing QB with a grade 3 or higher AC injury to his throwing shoulder). In theory, alternatively he has some entirely separate glenohumeral ligament capsular tear, but I doubt it.

Basically... he gets no extra sympathy points for saying the same thing twice unless we get more specific info.

Any given Sunday. But part of me (assuming a variety of things) wants to see the Pats go into Denver and beat them. But win this Saturday and worry about the 24th on the 24th. What Denver does doesn't matter.

I've resigned myself to this game being a walkover for Denver.

I'd love to read an argument to the contrary.
Peyton is awful. Pittsburgh's glaring weakness is that they can't cover downfield. Their front seven is pretty good. Without an ability to exploit Pittsburgh downfield Denver could have trouble moving the ball.

Toussaint was a pleasant surprise last week and he can catch the ball. Without Brown Pittsburgh's pass catching options are merely really good rather than league-best. Maybe Ben isn't as hurt as they're saying and he'll surprise them with a good deep ball at some point.

Pittsburgh may have an edge at kicker.

Home playoff favorites often tighten up badly if they fall behind early. Maybe Peyton puts them in a hole they can't climb out of.

I don't know. I'm not sure I really buy my own case. Mostly the hope is that Manning is actually a lot worse than mediocre and it just hasn't been fully exposed yet.
