Shawn Tolleson came in for Texas in the ninth with a 5-4 lead

Single, single, double, single, home run ... 9-5 Seattle, still no outs

Jolly ol' England
Jose Fernandez against the Tigers. Struck out Miggy with nasty, nasty slider. 1st inning and featuring a 98mph fastball. Never lost at home 17-0.

Maeda, the Dodgers pitcher has out homered and out scored the Padres. Woof

All that the Padres need is a World Series MVP able to hit even good pitching!

Although, with Farrell discussing his intent on playing NL-style roulette with Shaw, Bradley, Holt, Young, and Castillo, having Panda on the bench seems like the Sox roster situation is fated to continue awhile yet.

Old friend Jake Peavy getting lit up by another old friend Adrian Gonzalez today. Two doubles, missing two HRs by just a few feet. Gonzo still has that great swing. Dodgers playing great for Dave Roberts so far.

In other former Red Sox v. former Red Sox news, Rubby De La Rosa just struck out John Lackey. Otherwise, neither is pitching well. 3-2 D-Backs after one and a half.

Edit: And vice versa, Lackey K'd RDLR.

Lackey just tried to kill two guys on one play. Gives up a gapper to left center. Fowler and Schwarber collide, and Schwarber has to be carted off, while the D-Back batter comes up clutching his shoulder after the slide upon completing the inside the park HR.

Crazy play. Seemed like I could hear Schwarber moaning while he was down.
Segura has 2 HRs in 2 innings off Lackey.

What a crazy game. D-Backs catcher tumbles on a high pop behind the plate with first and third. Rizzo tags up, catcher throws into center, Cubs tie it. I think it's a sacrifice foul pop up, with an error. Still just the middle of the third.

It is a crazy game. But not a sacrifice foul pop-up, and no RBI for Bryant because it was the throwing error that allowed the run to score.

No RBI, but doesn't he get a sac for the runner advancing to second?
No sac for advancing a runner on a fly ball (unless it's to home, and would have scored without an error). You get a sac for advancing a runner to second if it's a bunt. I have a scoring rules site that explains all the nuances of scoring in easy to follow terms. The page for sacrifices is here

After this bad news for baseball fans, here's some uplifting news: Trevor Story just went yard... Again.

He now has 5 HR in his first 4 MLB games.
That's Sam Horn like. I didn't look it up... might have taken him 6 or 7 games, but I remember being pissed that they waited till mid year to call him up. If he was there from April, he had a shot at 60!

Astros comeback attempt was quashed when Rasmus slid past second base to break up a double play (that wasn't going to be made with Altuve running, the 2B wasn't going to attempt to throw). Players gotta figure this one out fast. Rasmus had a good shot at beating the throw if he slid directly.

Players gotta figure it out? I think the league needs to figure it out. If/when the red sox lose a game in this fashion we're all going to go batshit crazy. I've seen the replay at least 5 times now and I've read the rule a couple time and I still don't know why the double play was awarded. This was far less egregious than the Bautista call a few days ago.

I mean, it didn't even seem like Rasmus reached for the base and did a takeout slide with the feet up. Even if the rule is being applied strictly, if it's going to be, players will have to be careful. Astros may not have won that game, but the Brewers RP looked bad and Altuve at first can cause trouble
