Guardado sent off and Uruguay immediately equalizes.

This game has a late Marquez Rage Red written all over it.

This has been by far the most entertaining match so far. Both teams going for it, chances left and right, great keeping, chippy too
Amen. My eyes are glued to the TV. Godin is seriously one of the best players on the planet, he's been on fire since long before the goal. No Suarez, no problem.

edit: ok, maybe a slight problem.

edit2: where did Uruguay's D go? One minute they look like Atletico Madrid, the next, like Everton.

The second goal changed everything obviously. Fox never showed a replay as to why Uruguay is arguing so much but something tells me that second goal shouldn't have happened.

What refs are they using in this comp (concacaf and conmebol)? They've seemed unable to keep control of games at times.

There may have been an offside on the second Mexico goal. That clearly rattled Uruguay. Good god was that crowd bonkers. Mexico has more HFA in the US than USA does
It's insane how often Mexico plays in the US, even setting aside US-hosted tournaments like this Copa America or all the Gold Cups. Let's look:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_national_football_team_schedule_and_results

2016: 3 friendlies, all in the US
2015: 11 friendlies, 7 in the US, 2 in Mexico, 2 elsewhere [1 of the 7 US friendlies was against the US. The two elsewhere were Copa America turneups]
2014: 13 friendlies, 8 in the US, 3 in Mexico, 2 elsewhere
2013: 5 friendlies, all in the US
2012: 6 friendlies, 5 in the US, 1 in Mexico
2011: 10 friendlies, 6 in the US, 2 in Mexico, 2 elsewhere

and so on

I couldn't tell why the Uruguay players protested so much. The goal looked legal to me. Then again, Godin is Mr. Cool, so he took issue with something, I tend to think he's right.

I'm about 99.99% sure the argument by the Uruguay players was that there was a handball. When Marquez played the ball off his chest, the ball looked to me like it hit his arm. In fact, I didn't even celebrate the goal because I thought it wouldn't count.

It definitely wasn't offside though.

The schedule makers sure did do Mexico a big favor. All of their group games will be played in border states. If you thought they had a huge HFA in Glendale, just wait until they play in Pasadena. It'll be a massive, rowdy sea of green.

This is basically the pattern of Copa America - some godawful games early on, but when the top 4-5 teams play, it's about as good as it gets. This go around, any matchup involving USA, Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, or Argentina will be worth watching, and the matchups between those teams will be what makes this competition real fun (Argentina-Chile tonight should be a blast). When it's the like of Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, et al, not so much.

Group D gets underway tonight with an undercard of Panama vs. Bolivia and then Chile vs. Argentina. That should be a fun one.

Panama with a late strike in 87th minute, up 2-1.

I'm a bit surprised ARG picked this game to rest Messi and Aguero, unless they're both really injured. Argentina could beat Panama and Bolivia even if they started with 10 men; this game is the one that likely determines whether their QF is against Uruguay (I'm assuming they'll rally for group runner-up), or against Mexico.

Messi I would assume is injured. Higuain may just be being rewarded for a very strong season. I think it's nuts to play him over Aguero but I suppose you could make a case

Speaking of Chile's lineup, what happened to Jorge Valdivia? All I can find on a quick googling is that he's healthy. Is someone of his skills really washed up at 32?

Angel di Maria with a nice run, receives a nice through ball, and finishes with his left for a 1-0 lead.

And that goal surely means Messi is unlikely to play tonight

Edit: it was really soft for Bravo. Game has been played via turnovers in the midfield. It is appropriate that the first goal came that way

Oops. 2-0 now, off a deflection.

Take the boots off Messi, put some slippers on.

Argentina brings on Lamela. I'm a little surprised England let him out of the warmups for the Euros to swing by for the match.
Cool how far he has come in a year from not making the #1 team to being the second sub on after Sergio Aguero. His greatest skill is relentless effort and that fits in nicely for this team off the bench.

That was a fun football match to watch. Love it when two talented teams are willing to trade haymakers like that.

Neither of the goals was quite in the run of play, but I was impressed with how effortlessly Argentina kept their defensive shape in the rear two-thirds against a really aggressive Chile, while still being dangerous on attack. Without Messi and (mostly) Aguero? They made a great team look (mostly) punchless - I think they're they clear favorites.

My other take is that Vidal was absolutely invisible for most of the game. More than anyone he seemed the reason Chile couldn't find the net. Everything juicy was over the top to Sanchez, not possession through Vidal.

I'm the biggest Higuain hater out there, but he's on some of the best form in the world right now. Pair that with MANC's lackadaisical end to the season, and I have no problem with Pipita starting. I thought he was excellent throughout, looked confident and aggressive, and put in tremendous workrate. Gaitan also played very well and this team looks much more frisky now. I also think Fernandez is a huge upgrade over Biglia, which should not be understated. Messi probably comes into the side for Gaitan although I wonder if that will crowd the midfield a bit too much with Banega. Di Maria had a tremendous game too. The only big chances Argentina gave up were on a turnovers in the middle, same as Chile.

Speaking of which, that was Copa America at its best. Two talented teams playing aggressively. It was back and forth with chances and skill all over the field. I thought the first Bravo goal was super soft although it looks like Di Maria pulled the trigger very quickly on his second touch which is hard to read. Second Arg goal was on a deflection. I fell asleep for the last 10 mins of the game (they need to quit it going forward with these 10pm starts), but it looks like Romero had a goof, otherwise he played an outstanding game and his save on Sanchez in the first half was world class. I also thought the ref did a remarkably good job in that game.

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. Almost every game on the west coast is a 7:00 PM local start time (except for the occasional Saturday/Sunday game). That's 10:00 for you east coast folks.

Doesn't get much better with the semifinal in Houston kicking off at 8:00 on a Tuesday night. Such is the nature of our time zone beast, though.

Must win game for the USMNT tonight.

I know we've talked about what we'd like to see JK do, but anyone have ideas on what they think he actually will do?

My guess is Beckerman in for Jones to sit behind Bradley and Bedoya. Otherwise the same.

Alternatively, he could sub Jones and try Cameron at DMF and insert Besler at CB, or just a straight swap of Nagbe for Jones. I think JK would probably like to get one of FJ or Yedlin further upfield, but without good alternatives at FB, don't see that happening. Wither DaMarcus Beasley??

I'd be fine with some of those subs, but does Bedoya really still deserve his spot? Who might reasonably be plugged in for him? He had the ugliest game of the whole side last time, his every touch seemingly went awry.

Off topic, and I generally dislike commecials, but the All State mayhem guy commercials on Univision are just as weird and funny as the ones during college football. Guy had a bus with soccer balls in luggage bay, hit a bump, balls and car accidents follow in his wake. Guy keeps driving completely oblivious

Yeah they really are well done. I love the guy at the end who takes a running start and boots the shit out of a ball in frustration.

Costa Rica is playing in their usual 5-4-1, which is a counter-attacking formation. I'm a little worried that they'll be content to cede a lot of harmless possession to the US and we'll struggle to break down an organized defense, without a #10 and with our front three all in roles that don't fit their strengths.

No set piece fuck-ups tonight, please.

So basically you're concerned with a carbon copy repeat of the Colombia match?

Good to see JK waiting until a meaningful tournament to start the same XI two games in a row. Why would anyone want to do that in 18 months of meaningless friendlies instead? :bagd::bagd:

Yes, but moreso. Costa Rica is starting five in the back and one of their CMs tonight (Bolaños) is usually an outside player. They're not going to be able to possess the much of the ball without making substitutions. Colombia was able to step on the gas when they wanted to.
