I was on the fence about Horford coming into free agency, but in this market this is an offer they had to make. Glad it worked out.

Now onto the real prize...

That news comes out right after the Celtics' Durant meeting ended. I bet they had Horford on the phone.
This certainly makes things interesting. I'd have loved to be fly on the wall during that meeting! Danny has already pulled two Auerbachian deals in his tenure......make me wrong and nail a 3rd I beg!!!!

If this somehow happens and the Celtics win a title(s) with Durant, Brady officially gets credited, making him an even GOATier GOAT than humans thought possible.

I think the original plan before the draft was to have Butler and Horford on the team before the meeting. Chicago demanding our Nets future picks changed that but we still got Horford and have a punchers chance at landing Durant.

He's getting twice what he's worth but still, this is a step forward. It would've been depressing if we didn't sign a big name after what hapened - or I should say - didn't happen at the draft (no deals). And he is everything we need - a QUALITY BIG!

Could this entice Durant to sign with us?

If the Undead Corpse of Timofey Mozgov is worth $18 million per year, Horford is underpaid.

There is the opportunity cost similar to paying Ray Allen more than what he was worth in his role here to bring in the big banana. That makes it all worth it.

Yeah people need to stop looking at raw $. Horford is a max player, borderline perhaps depending how conservative you are.
He'll get 30% of the cap this year, then something like 25 next year with the bump. (equivalent of 22 this coming year or 17 the year that just ended). He's not some massive bargain, but neither is he overpaid.

Amazing. Wow. Him doing the pick and pop instead of Fat Sully or Zeller. Amazing.

Edit: played all 82 games last season. Only 6 guys did that. 76 year before. Injured year before but last two seasons are promising.

The two years he missed significant time I want to say were both pectoral tears. He doesn't utilize explosive movements which should continue to protect him against ACL's and similar type injuries.

Horford isn't a banger or aggressive in the paint. If he does end up here I hope people are expecting a rich mans Raef LaFrentz because that is the type of player he is.
You're talking about the young Lafrentz, before injuries sapped his athleticism, right? It's still kind of a stretch, outside of the jump shooting.

Horford is going to be so fun using his passing from the elbow to hit cutters. He's just a really good player, has extended his range to 3, excellent passer for a big man, low turnovers, very good defender, underrated rim protector.

This is a great signing for Ainge and the Celtics. A Durant signing combined with a cancellation of his meeting with Riley would make my 2016.

Yep, great passer from the elbow and the Celtics, with Bradley and IT, have some guys who can move without the ball and finish. I'm a big fan of this signing even without considering... well, you know.

No the older Raef. Horford never had a ton of athleticism he always was very good with positioning and utilizing angles.
He's definitely lost a step physically but still a good player.

This move alone should put them ahead of Toronto for the division.

Now seal KD so we can actually challenge LeBron again

I prefer this to Howard 200%. Not a physical dominator, but a very good player at both ends. His versatility should fit with this team's strategy. Glad it isn't 5 years. Olynyk should be able to run the same plays as a backup, which is where he belongs. Get KD and a shooter off the bench and this is a title contender.

Horford is 30 years old. He missed the majority of two of the past five seasons due to injury. He earns enough to interfere with the C's ability to lure a marquee free agent and retain its current core when they start getting expensive in two years (by which point Horford is likely to be useless)

This is a terrible, terrible deal, unless there is another shoe to drop. (Obviously, if signing Horford means KD signs a long-term deal here, then you'd do that in a cocaine heartbeat.)

He just turned 30, had the best year of his career, and doesn't have a ton of mileage on his legs (granted that's partly due to the pec injuries). He's a skilled big who doesn't rely on athleticism, and he's a major upgrade at the position. His absolutely does not interfere with the team's ability to lure another free agent, if anything, it's a plus. They still have a ton of assets and flexibility.

The cap is going up again. Everyone on the roster is tradeable. He fits the C's very well. Our bigs were fucking terrible, and the current core isn't so good that we should be worrying about retaining it. The quality of the core is also why we need a guy like Horford in the first place.
