Here's what Felger never understood. There are ways to get around current cap issues, but they pretty much all lead to extending the current player and giving him more guaranteed money with a contract extension that lowers the salary cap hit for that year. It just move the crisis into the future by a couple of years. As long as the cap kept going up, a team could keep punting on the issue, but with the cap being static for the last 3 years, the Jets have finally run into the wall. Now they have a bunch of older middling players that are owed a ton of money and since its all guaranteed, the dead money is huge if you cut them.
Great post.

By and large I can see why Felger thinks the "Cap is Crap" because if a team is smart they can find ways to work around the cap in order to get a player or two that they feel will make a difference. However, the Jets are not smart and there is only so often you can massage the cap and keep extending and signing players because if you don't stop it's going to bite you in the ass eventually.

Now it's Mike in Attleboro and some other needless screamer arguing with each other,

Click.
The other guy was Al from Everett, who used to be a celebrity caller on WEEI. A lot of the guys who used to call WEEI all the time have started to call 98.5 all the time. Danny from Quincy who now goes by Danny from the South Shore is another one.

Felger and Mazz teased these two clowns going into a commercial as I was driving home. I made it home in under 30 seconds.

Felger said something to the effect of "Mike from Attleboro, on of the best sports talk callers ever, doesn't think Bill Parcells should be in the Hall of Fame! And Al from Everett is on right after him! Let's hear what these two guys have to say!"

Good grief.

That makes sense with Danny. Danny is the worst IMO. He is one of the few people who can actually get me to turn off the radio. He sucks, has no take and sucks.

BTW speaking of sucking what ever happened to Ron from Vegas? SINCE HE STARTED USING TWITTER, he's been MIA where he was all over about 5 shows on 98.5.

I know 98.5 started off no celebrity callers, but they're getting bad. Does anyone enjoy them? Manny in the Truck is awful, Mike from Attleboro is getting worse by the day, Danny sucks, Ron from Malden/Quincy sucks. There's probably another 5 I'm easily missing. Who was the guy who faked he was in the North End? Joey? That all fell apart when they offered him a free book and wouldn't give Gresh & Zo his address since he was probably Spaulding from Newton and just faking being a guy from the North End.

Jack from LA was a decent caller but now apparently he has a real job and just posts on SoSH.

Not that it relates to this but I have to say listening yesterday to Gresh & Zo and Zo screaming "just comin' my ass!!!" was pretty damn funny.

awesome move by Felger today... Picks the Ravens. He'll most likely be the only local guy with the balls to make that certain of a prediction.
Yeah, a real prediction that he may very well be wrong about. And when he is wrong, he'll acknowledge it.

Felger has reasons for picking the Ravens, too. You can tell this isn't something he is pulling out of his ass to generate phone calls. The phone lines would've been full all week regardless.

And if he's wrong, he'll get hate calls all next week when the Superbowl will still be 2 weeks away. He's just programmed the bye week

not particularly surprising to me. Felger is a guy who believes in story lines, momentum, and toughness. All of these things are aligning on the Ravens side. Felger is of course a contrarian and that appeals to him as well. I'd honestly have been more surprised if he DIDNT pick the Ravens, it just aligns with what he purports to be his worldview, he's a complete sucker for swagger.

I don't have a problem with him choosing the Ravens because they are always a tough match up for the Patriots and it always seems to be some kind of fluke play that determines the outcome going back to 2007. He was on the fence last night on CNNSE about who he thought would win the game but it makes sense for him to do it for his show.

At least he has legit reasons for picking them and isn't "just" playing contrarian and at the same time it generates callers for two weeks, and if he is wrong he'll admit it and he is never going to say that the Ravens will smoke them just that he thinks they can win this weekend.

I have much less of a problem with Felger's pick than I do with Vegas installing the Pats as 9-point favorities. I think it's a pick-'em game.

If you want to give the Pats a slight advantage for home field, fine. But Felger's pick is not provocative for the sake of being provocative, IMO.

but his reasons are asinine. saying that they can keep Brady and the Pats in the 20's because the D is very good...did he watch the game this weekend/

Also, I am sick and tired of his BS "the last 9 Super Bowl Winners are going to the Hall of Fame routine...its the way the NFL has changed...no Jackass, its ALWAYS been that way.

Brady is seldom, if ever, at his best against the Ravens, whose defense played exceptionally well in Denver. It's not an unreasonable position.

You believe that? Really? I'm obviously more cynical. I don't think he even bothers to think about who he "really" thinks will win. I think he considers what is best for his business and then works up reasons.

Brady scored 30 against them in week 3. The Ravens D, which happens to be the oldest in the league by a fair margin, has been on the field for over 160 plays the last two games, half of which came in the frigid cold thin air in Denver. It wouldn't really be a stretch to expect their defense to be less than 100% and the Patriots warp-speed offense, even without Gronk and maybe Woodhead, to run them off the field.

It's not mutually exclusive is it? He can bring up story lines and take a side to make the show's storylines better, but he's obviously not just making shit up. Anyone who thinks this week is a slam dunk is insane. He's saying it'll be close, the Ravens have beaten them at home in the playoffs, they beat the Pats this year and since 2004 the Pats have eventually faltered and not scored 30+ points and lost.

He's not even saying things that deserve to get fired up, he just calls up yelling for no reason so we know its him. God he gets worse by the day.

He's not picking against the spread. He's picking them to win outright. Transparent trolling.

Right because no one in their right mind could possibly believe that the Patriots could lose at home to the Ravens. He must be trolling because they are trailing EEI in the ratings.

He laid out his case and you can choose to agree or disagree.

Transparent trolling? The Ravens beat the Patriots..........this season. Before that the Patriots played the Ravens at home.......in the AFCCG and won..........by a FG.

A legitimate, sound, case can be made for either team to win this game. No matter what Las Vegas says.

Trolling is when Felger says that Tebow should be drafted, in part, to "goose" Brady, or when he feels that things will "end badly" between Brady and the Pats because Kraft is such a short sighted hardass when it comes to money. He's either trolling or an imbecile.

This is different. You can make a very respectable argument for a Ravens' win that extends beyond "anything can happen".

The problem is that when you "troll" often enough, many people just assume you are doing it any time you pick a controversial or unpopular position.

Eh, I find Felger obnoxious, and not as smart or entertaining as others, but I agree with dc, Rocco, HB, etc. Forget the line spread - BAL is a different beast than HOU. They're practically a divisional rival at this point, and almost every game outside of the '09 beatdown in the playoffs has literally come down to the final plays. I think the Pats are better than the Ravens, but their slew of close games in the past few 4 or so years, plus BAL's gutsy win at DEN, should give one legitimate pause.

We have no way of knowing what Felger's 'real' opinion is, but this doesn't feel like trolling to me, is the best way I can put it. He lays out a plausible scenario with valid reasons.

Trolling to me is Felger coming out and playing the heel. If he were saying things like :

"The Patriots don't stand a chance against Flacco and this defense."
"Brady wilts under pressure in these big games and only won last year because Baltimore lost."
"Belichick has lost a step and can't figure out how to stop Flacco from scoring"

Stuff like that would cause me to turn off the radio as "transparent trolling". A Green Bay fan objectively looking at it and saying he likes the Ravens chances with solid reasoning is more like providing a different perspective to me.

Honestly, I don't know how this game isn't scaring the shit out of everyone because like MM said outside of 09 every game has come down to some fluke play in the final seconds.

I'm not saying there is anyting wrong with picking the Ravens, it is the conference finals so I think other than in exceptional circumstances you are always going to be able to make a reasonable case for either team playing. But I keep hearing that the game will be close because the Ravens and the Pats always play close games. Other than the game played earlier this year (and even that is debatable since the teams are both quite different since then) I don't know that past close games mean that this game is going to be close. Personally this game scares me less than the Texans game but maybe that is just me.

As to the topic at hand, I don't think Felger is trolling but I also don't think he really believes his argument, I think he just thinks taking that stance will make for more interesting radio this week, and he's probably right.

I can only speak for myself, but it isn't that past results dictate future outcomes. It's that the teams are intimately familiar with one another, a la a divisional rival, and, as we know, even a lesser team like Buffalo can cause problems because it's not surprised by what you're doing, and, more importantly, has ample experience actually playing you. For all their talk, the Texans still were not remotely ready for the Patriots offense.

This is partly why SEA was the less desirable matchup for SF, to use another example.

I think Felger's trolling a bit here, and I generally like listening to him. I think he believes it's going to be a close game, but he's trolling the listeners by choosing to say he thinks Baltimore will win rather than saying, "it'll be close, and I have no idea who I think will win."

While he did say it would be close, all he said to justify why the Ravens would win is "this time the ball will bounce their way." Well, why? I think he just knows if he doesn't have a real opinion as to who to will win the game, the smart move is to pick the team that will rile up the masses. This way, if it is a close game and the Ravens lose, he could still say, "well I thought it would be close, I just didn't get the 'bounce of the ball' call right."

If you sat down over a few drinks with Felger, I bet the house that he'd admit he thinks this game is a total toss up. Being a contrarian, he can't say that on the radio if that's how he really feels. He'd get hammered for not "sacking up" and picking a team.

Beyond that, it's stupid, sophomoric, sound-bite trolling .... "they won't be the same" really? And weren't Ray-Ray and Pollard on the team last year, when you favored the Pats? When you've been a beat writer for an NFL team for 10 years, bring something to the table. Tell us about the under-the-radar younger Ravens on defense. Lazy lazy.

All of these guys on all of these stations will be unlistenable the remainder of the week. Time to tune them all out.

Patriots put 30 on them this season on the road, while Webb was still playing, and their defense was much healthier (and well rested). Oh, that was before they started playing at a lightning quick pace too. The Ravens might very well win the game, but I'd be very surprised if the Patriots struggled to move the ball.

Nah, they'll switch gears to the Bruins and hardly miss a beat.
I know that, I was just informed otherwise in the AFCCG game thread. I think the loss will help this week, because everyone will want to hear Felgey, and then by next week, they can talk about the NHL season full on.

Felger says Ray Lewis or Pollard will hit Shane Vereen and Woodhead hard and expects that they won't be the same after.

Ray's got to catch them first, Mike.
He was wrong- it was Ridley they hit. Still wondering why helmet to helmet like that on a rb is legal when it would be a pf if they hit a qb or a wideout that way.

Exactly. I think Pollards butt was on the ground, or darn near it. He didn't lead with his head - Ridley did, and paid for it.

Felgers' prediction of a Ravens' win was reasonable, and I defended it last week.

Nobody is really interested in a pull-it-out-of your-ass prediction of a Pats SB win, 54 weeks before the game is played, with the obvious and significant challenges facing the team this offseason. There is no reasonable basis for it. Seems to be a postscript to the effect, "I'm not always a prick."

I'm with you. I'm still not sure why that was such a controversial pick.

As far as his SB prediction for next year, it may be over the top to say they'll actually win it, but I think it's pretty safe to say they are a likely AFC favorite by the time September roles around. I don't see any shake ups that would knock them down several pegs. Even if Welker did leave, they'd likely use the money to add talent at WR, and their defense has finally turned a corner for the better.
