Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

Felger spends the day getting pissed at the team for things that haven't happened (letting Butler go).

It violates one of their "commandments."

It was McAdam and Extra Whiny Mazz today. Sean attempted to beat into Mazz the difference between RFA and UFA. I don't think it took.
Yeah, Mazz kept bypassing Sean and insisted on discussing what Butler is worth in the range between what UFAs Ryan and Gilmore signed for. Murray was not much better, harping on a possible Pats offer of $6-7 million a year ago being a slap in the face to Butler.

Look, I don't want the Pat's to let Butler go unless it is for the Saint's first, but Tony Mazz is saying the same stuff today that he loudly proclaimed after 2014 -- "Why are you getting rid of all your corners."

He was lamenting Revis and Browner. I doubt Butler will turn out like that, but I wish he would have the self awareness to ackowledge he has zero credibility on Patriot's personnel decisions.

Also now he loves Logan Ryan.

Mazz has hammered every decision this team has made the last three years and has been wrong every time. Logan Mankins. Revis. Jamie Collins. Chandler Jones. Every draft day trade.

I couldn't listen today, Mazz kept telling me I should be angry because Butler might be traded. I mean two super bowls in three years, a great offseason and I'm supposed to be mad?

He's incapable of filling the Felger, contrarian, rile upi the fan base role.

Exactly...after last week's comments:

"At what point does last season end and this season begin? I'm on to 2017. It starts now"
--Mazz on the Pats.

What an asshat take on Hightower. They assume DH has a foot out the door because the Pats didn't tag him. Like there is no possibility that this is what both sides want.

Jim Murray is literally just another Felger/Mazz.

He has adopted their persona, except he is less talented than Felger. He is just so mad because Celtic fans like IT, are happy they are winning.

THese guys make it so they can't be wrong. If the Celtics finish lower than 2nd seed, they say they are "just another team." Now they might finish #1 and it is "well don't tell me they can get away with anything less than a ECF."

They also are mad at the reverence fans have for IT and Stevens, but that reverence is justified. They can find the occasional fan who says something stupid (ie, we will beat CLE) but the news is never good for the Celtics. If they are good the news is "being good doesn't matter."

It is just fucking ridiculous. Felger will crème himself if the B's finish 8th. The C's may finish 1

Here's my prediction for the time breakdown of today's four hour show:

0:20 - How well the Bruins and Rask played in that pressure-packed, must-have game last night
3:40 - What an idiot Marchand is, how long he should/will be suspended

What % of today's show will be dedicated to long baseball games in April and how awful they are for everyone's existence? Followed up with terrible scheduling in April ("THEY WERE PLAYING IN 40 DEGREES AND RAIN MIKE! WHILE TORONTO WAS ON THE ROAD THIS WEEK!!") (which BTW I agree with)

So, barring some big Richard Sherman/Jimmy G news I expect most of today's show to be split between the fraud Celtics and how terrible baseball is

When the Pats lose a single game, Felger and Mazz preach how we have to live in the moment and focus entirely on the loss, especially when a caller tries to argue that they should take the long term perspective and the fact that the team will still easily win 12 games that season and be in the AFC Championship game at a minimum.

Yet when Chris Sale has a great debut giving up 0 runs, no, we can't live in the moment. We need to think long term, the fact that its April, its cold, we were playing the Pirates and its all meaningless. Gotta love Mazz logic!

So, the day after a Pats win or a Sale shutout, the show should be four hours of "they're awesome!"? There's a reason the Chris Farley Show is still funny all these years later - it is cringe inducing and painful to listen to nothing but praise and adoration. That sort of fanboy enthusiasm is unsustainable, and annoying.

Meanwhile, focusing on the loss drives both calls and ratings. When there's nothing to say but "they're awesome!" there's no reason to listen, or call. Misery loves company, and all that.

Further, comparing the Patriots and their (very) infrequent losses with any event in baseball is useless. The Pats get, at most, 19 events in a season. There are 10x that number of games in baseball, and an April game - no matter how dominant a performance - is far closer to meaningless.

Now, I'm sure Mazz was downplaying the Sale performance because he didn't watch it. He was probably watching a Law & Order rerun or The Bachelor. So, when Mazz downplays an early April game, it's not purely about the game being "meaningless". It is cover for the fact that he reads the box score and maybe a game story the next day. And pooh-poohing Sale's performance DID make the phones ring and gave the show something to say other than "Mike, he was AWESOME!" for four hours.

I heard the Baseball Show for ten minutes the day after the Sale pitching performance and Mazz wanted style points. Plain and simple. He wants that after every "big win", no matter if it's the Pats, Sox, Celts or B's. If the one of those four squeak by a team, then "they're lucky" and "we'll see about next time". If they blow the other team out then either the other team wasn't "good enough" ('Mike, I think that we overrated Team X.') or it wasn't "pretty enough".

At this point Mazz is a Russian skating judge. "Yes, you do triple axel? But why no quadruple axel? Two stars."

You're right, a daily Chris Farley Show would be boring and suck, I don't argue that. But sometimes you have to say a good win is a good win, otherwise you're trolling. And that's as boring and sucky as TCFS.

This is why I stopped listening to them last year and never looked back. I don't want all sunshine and roses, but I got sick of being trolled during my commute home every day. And from reading this thread, seemingly that is all they are at this point - trolls. Between the 100% focus on the negative, the constant moving of the goalposts, etc. Every update to this thread just reminds me that I made the right decision.

Absolutely true. But that is what they do; it is what it is and I expect nothing different. Unless there are style points and a compelling narrative attached to the good win - such as a historic comeback - they are going to crap on the win as "meaning less" than a win in which something juicy and worthy of talking about happens. A routine win, even if it is a good performance by a debutant, is going to get trolled because that's how they get the phone to ring and listeners to stay tuned in.

'Mazz the Russian Skating Judge' is a fantastically descriptive phrase. I salute you, sir.

Mazz complaining about Sale is truly beyond the pale.

14.67 innings, 1.23 ERA, .682 WHIP.

Shut the fuck up Mazz.... the Price comparison is absurd. Price was not good for many starts. His velocity is down. Sale has been dominant. I know he is trolling. Felger's "suck on that Red Sox fans," confirmed it!

But really, plenty of valid complaints/concerns: Pomeranz, Price, Dombrowski,Kimbrel, Panda, the offense, Farrell....

And he freaks out about Sale who has been great? This is the downside of working from home. Switching to 90210 reruns on POP

Why complain about Drew? He pitched great. 6 innings one run ball? Don't understand why you would have a problem with his outing yesterday either..Both him and Sale have been the least of the Red Sox problems.

Mazz sees Pomeranz as exclusively a bullpen pitcher, becuz Dombrowski sucks at building bullpenz!!1!11!
He won't complain about yesterday. He focuses on losing Espinoza for a pitcher he views as not that good.
Mazz is obssessed with giving up Espinoza, a player he NEVER saw pitch and is only going off of third--hand commentary from Cafardoesque sources. He has absolutely no idea about anything regarding Espinoza.

Pomeranz: overpay, bad, hurt, and belongs in the bullpen. Espinoza: 19YO Sandy Koufax, according to someone who told Mazz.

That's Mazz' perspective, come hell, high water, or 6+ innings of 4-hit pitching against the hallowed Buck Showalter's squad.

To be fair to Mazz, Espinoza did have a 4.49 ERA in A ball last year and averaged 4.5 innings a game. So he's a lock and the future Pedro.

I get the kids only 19, but it's a complete crapshoot at this point. The Pomeranz trade may end up being a bad or terrible one, but it's a long ways from that at this point. Mazz is useless. I've tuned them out months ago and am better for it. I tune in occasionally and it's fine since you're not hearing it every day all day.

It's taken almost 8 years, but these two now have here as many champions as Bill Cosby. With good reason.

It would be interesting if a Jefe locked this thread -- with an open invitation to Part II another upon evidence of a show segment that meets these requirements:

1) Pertinent to one of the local 4 -- Bs, Cs, Pats or RS;

2) Substantial - more than a throwaway line; and

3) Sensible.

How long would we wait for Part II?

I pretty much agree. Most of the comments here show that Mazz and Felger are remarkably effective at trolling and getting people outraged, and Felger at least doesn't believe half of what he says.

The only solution to these guys is to ignore them. If Mazz is really stupid/negative/a big enough asshole to spout patent nonsense at every opportunity that clearly flies in the face of reason, then it's up to us not to go for the bait again.

Felger and Mazz don't need anyone's defense, but their trolling fits into the overall sphere of sports talk. There was barely room for nuance in sports radio 20 years ago and that fissure has been sealed shut for the foreseeable future. The forum would be hard pressed to name a local or national sports radio talk show that it approves. An overwhelming majority troll their audience, while most of the rest run interference for the sports establishment. I guess Dan Patrick hosts an even keeled show, but I have never found national sports talk to be compelling.

EDIT: T&R doesn't troll and mostly doesn't pander. I wonder if that is because they did not make their names working in sports media.

Holley and Keefe. They're smart, they discuss things based mostly on facts, state what they are biased about, and don't take themselves too seriously. They're mostly having a non-adversial conversation about sports. And then Dale goes and steps on their whole flow.

True enough, but there's also little point in posting things like, "Another really enjoyable show from Holley and Keefe today." I've been a steady online listener since Keefe made the jump, and I couldn't be happier.

I do wonder, though, what management ultimately does about the fact that a pretty good-to-good show becomes a very good-to-great show every time Dale isn't there. The strength of the broadcast is the easy and winning chemistry that Holley and Keefe are developing.

People do it for Toucher and Rich or articles by Joe Pos.

The ratings place Dale and Holley in second place and are very healthy. Boston sports radio has been in incredible boom period and they have also benefited, but they aren't driving discussion because their ratings are half of what Felger and Mazz are pulling (16.4 share in December). I think we will look back at the numbers Sports Hub has posted since Deflategate kind of like 1980s NHL stats.

The third chair makes all the difference. Felger and Mazz went way downhill after Beetle went to middays and was replaced with the horrible not funny Jim Murray.

Keefe has been great on his new role and makes that show vastly better. I listen to them every time over Felger and Mazz.

Felger has very recently turned to trolling Mazz. Today, they were making predictions for the Celtics vs Bulls . Mazz said the Celtucs should obliterate the Bulls and winning in more than 6 games would be kind of a failure.
Felger just said "Mazz, winning a series is not a failure" and trolled Mazz about that for a minute.
Then, the Sox game went final and Felger started in on Mazz who thinks Kimbrel sucks.

Dear Lord Maz is going from feeling compassion for Hernandez (wtf?) to being outraged he killed himself, and is saying he may have killed himself because he got off on the double murder but knows he did it and feels guilty he's not being punished for it, I can't say I've ever heard a worse take on anything ever before.

Worst take ever? Kirk and Callahan are taking credit for getting Hernandez to kill him self since they broke the story he may be bisexual. That's a much worse take.

Hurley won that one by a lot. Felgers argument was he "works hard" to put himself in the position he is in and so he can vacation on Nantucket. That argument is stupid because if he took 2 weeks off that is not going to stop him from getting to where he is now. Felger acts like if he is off for even a day he screws himself.

Good Lord, Hurley was being a total pussy. It sounded like his argument was that he needed all the extra time at home because his wife has a screaming newborn with a 2 year old to deal with. Ok, I know exactly what that's like. And he said that they don't have parents and/or in-laws available to help. Believe me, I know what it's like to go from 1 child to 2, some days it feels like you went from 1 child to 5. Then don't have the second child then if it's going to be that much of a hardship with only one parent at home. What's the wife going to do after the 2 weeks? She's still going to end up having to deal with the clusterfuck of a 2 week old and a 2 year old with no help.

It was great to see Mike snap the moment Hurley brought up the Nantucket thing. I know everyone puts their work at a different priority level, but I agree with Mike on this one.

Seriously? Felger called out Hurley while he's out on paternity leave on the air with no provocation. The issue is he called it out the air and then dismissed it as joking. Felger's been a douche about this issue for awhile and it's tired.

Your following points are not relevant about wanting to have kids or not etc. Hurley is doing what most normal parents do and take a couple weeks when you have kids. He's not asking for months off, he's just taking a couple weeks which his employer agrees with. Felger's not gotten ahead because he didn't take paternity leave etc. His argument is a pile of crap.

On the other hand I do agree with Felger if you're a starting pitcher get your shit done and deal with it. Calling out a lower level employee at your own organization is another story. Fuck him.

Didn't hear it, never listen, but from what I'm seeing here, Felger's a gigantic douchebag (no surprise). Who is he or you or anyone else to judge whether or not this guy is justified in taking two weeks of paternity leave? Perhaps the delivery was difficult and mom's recovery wasn't exactly smooth sailing. There's plenty that can happen that is completely unexpected or unforeseen when they decide to have the second kid.

Just to offer an example, my sister had some trouble during the birth of her second kid because the doctor fucked up the epidural. She had some leaking of spinal fluid that caused headaches and dizziness anytime she was upright for longer than 15-20 minutes. She was pretty much bedridden for a week after she got home. No way she was handling a newborn and a 2.5 year old on her own. Fortunately for her, her mother-in-law, our mother and I are all nearby enough that we could pitch in. My brother-in-law's employer was pretty understanding as well, giving him whatever time he needed.

Can't imagine the bind they'd have been in if they were further away from family and his employers were Felger-ian dicks about paternity leave.

Well, I always thought Felger's rants towards Hurley seemed fairly lighthearted. I thought Hurley sounded like a whiner saying Felger was "attacking him and his family". I don't remember Felger saying anything about his family.

And if the company gives you 2 weeks, fine take it. But I just think it's kind of overkill.

I just think Felger's points on work ethic are valid. If Hurley doesn't advance in his job as fast as he wants, it's just something to keep in mind. Will those 2 weeks really make a difference? Probably not. And maybe Hurley doesn't care, he just wants to have a job. That's fine too, nothing wrong with that.

His points on work ethic are valid but not appropriately applied. There's a difference between an employee that make sure they get every vacation hour every year and milks it vs someone taking a couple weeks twice in their life when they have a kid.

I work constantly and took about 6 hours off when we had our kid. My work allows me to work from anywhere and I had shit to do in the hospital room the next morning and did it. I don't begrudge anyone who doesn't do that and it didn't help advance my career. Most My coworkers replied to emails saying get off of email.

Felger is 100% wrong here.
