This is horrible. I thought this ran around spring training though? Or was it still speculation at that point?Remy diagnosed with cancer again
I took that as the announcement that the cancer had come back. So, is this an actual new development? I did see that that tweet came from just 2-3 hours ago, so the tweet is definitely new.“I’ve been diagnosed with cancer again but it’s under control” Remy said on Twitter Monday.
It's a new development. After the last bout and treatment he announced he was "cancer free" again. This is a new diagnosis.I am a bit confused.
From a link posted in this very thread in February:

Ok, thank you. I thought it seemed too recent to have changed. It's a new development. After the last bout and treatment he announced he was "cancer free" again. This is a new diagnosis.
@soxhop411 and others, start new threads when there's new news. This has nothing to do with his contract, there's no need to bump a thread that's been dormant for 3+ months.
From what little I heard about it during the broadcast last night, he'll be throwing out the first pitch and there will be a ceremony primarily honoring his 30 years in the broadcast booth. Between first the announcement that he'll not be back before the end of the season, and now this "Jerry Remy Day", it's reasonable to believe they don't think he's coming back at all.Anyone hear any specifics on Saturday? Supposedly something to honor Remy before/during the game for his contributions to the franchise, on the field and in the booth, both.

I agree that the love to celebrate things, but typically those celebrations are planned for months in advance. For example, we knew yesterday was going to be the night to celebrate the 1967 team since last winter. Ditto for David Ortiz's number retirement. As a counterargument, They really love to celebrate
things. I don't think he'd make a public appearance if he's in too rough a shape. Granted that's a big assumption.

That the Remy thing has come up so seemingly out of the blue makes me wonder if there's a reason for concern. Not necessarily that he's not going to beat it this time, but that maybe it's beaten him enough that he won't be back in the booth.
He has been very upfront about his previous cancer bouts the past couple of years especially during The Jimmy Fund Telethon. He's also been upfront about the depression that he's previously battled because of it. In the later years he's pretty much embraced it as a way to speak to and inform others. At this stage of the game I don't think shy away from a night in his honer unless he were physically unable. That might also be a reason why this seems to be happening so quickly, perhaps do this before he's too far along into his treatments. No matter what the prognosis he may have decided it's time to spend time with family rather than on the road and there are only so many home games left this season. .As a counterargument, They really love to celebrate

You and Red(s)HawksFan have handled me nicely. My only response is, that they makes a lot of sense. He has been very upfront about his previous cancer bouts the past couple of years especially during The Jimmy Fund Telethon. Was just a personal observation. None of us really has any concrete idea of what is going on here. You and Red(s)HawksFan have handled me nicely. My only response is, that they makes a lot of sense.
Sounds like it is Sunday?Anyone hear any specifics on Saturday? Supposedly something to honor Remy before/during the game for his contributions to the franchise, on the field and in the booth, both.
But even further from the ground.May the Lord bless and keep Jerry Remy . . . . far from the broadcast booth.
/unabashed Eck Fan, and Salty has potential
I just, I mean Gomes?? Did he display any personality whatsoever in the booth? I must've missed those times, he was monotone and just so flat whenever I heard him, terrible. It was a touching tribute, and even though they kept assuring each other and the viewers he would be back next year, it sounded and felt more like a farewell.
As for fill-in analysts, Gomes rises to the top for me. Probably more as a character and for his unconventional style, like Eck, but I enjoyed his stint. Boggs had his moments. Timlin...not so much. Salty didn't do much for me yesterday.
I thought Salty was by far the best of the replacements. Just shows how subjective this really is.It was a touching tribute, and even though they kept assuring each other and the viewers he would be back next year, it sounded and felt more like a farewell.

I think they've all come off as monotone and flat, frankly. Chalk it up to them being new at this, but none of them seemed terribly animated or natural, and it's required some level of tolerance to get past. Gomes sprinkled in a few stories, and had a unique flair, in my opinion. I can understand why people didn't particularly like him, though, and I can definitely see his style wearing thin. But to each his own.I just, I mean Gomes?? Did he display any personality whatsoever in the booth? I must've missed those times, he was monotone and just so flat whenever I heard him, terrible.
I agree with this. I think people might have been swayed negatively by his monotone; but the points he was bringing out were very good.I thought Salty was by far the best of the replacements. Just shows how subjective this really is.
Salty also started to lose the monotone as the broadcast went on. Totally understandable to be nervous in that seat, especially on a day where the regular PBP guy is being honored. I'm sure having Jerry sit in for an inning or two (while absolutely a reasonable thing) didn't do Salty any favors as he lost a little of the momentum coming back in. By the end of the game he was a but more animated.I agree with this. I think people might have been swayed negatively by his monotone; but the points he was bringing out were very good.
EEI saying that Remy will be back in the booth tonight and maybe more over the weekend. (Sorry no link atm)
Sounds like good news.
Bradford must think there were two different Jonny Gomes's in the booth. Perhaps there were? A color guy inclined to explain the more nuanced aspects of the game, such as inherited runners; and another Jonny Gomes who explained that brawls were "a good character check for the boys."
Was this Applegate? What were they saying?Eck and Jerry were great together. I particularly enjoyed the part about signs.
Yeah this - very fun listen yesterday especially because it was 8-0 almost right away. You know they will run out of stories about Studio 54, right?
Maybe they can do just Eck and Remy?

Followed by a quick shutdown of that topic: tut, tut tut. Never change, Eck.Eck on Andy Warhol: "The guy who painted tomato cans. Andy Warhol. He was an albino, wasn't he?"
I am also a big fan of the Eck-Remy combo.
What was the Catfish story? According to b-ref, Remy's only HR off Hunter was in 77 with the Angels, while Eck was in Cleveland. How would he have remembered that? That was enterertaining last night. I especially liked Remy's homerun anecdotes... hitting one off Catfish in a game that Eck specifically remembered... and then some brief talk about spitballers from that era, a conversation that I could have listened to for hours.
I may have heard that part wrong. (But it was part of the same conversation.) Catfish was mentioned because he wasn't afraid to give up bombs. Remy even hit one off him. Eck remembered a particular HR (I thought they were still talking Catfish) might have been one Remy hit in '78 off Fergie Jenkins, because they were soon talking about how Oakland pitchers were notorious for loading the ball. What was the Catfish story?
