Should The Yankees Start Their Bullpen In The One Game Playoff?

Brian Kenny pitched the idea after today's game on MLBN.

I know it won't happen, but I think it is creative and actually makes a ton of sense. Starting off the game with Chad Green for 2+ shutdown innings and then follow him up with the rest of the guys would be quite a challenge for MIN. The collective bullpen has been the Yankees best pitcher this year, it would probably be wise to have them take over their most important game and have Severino be available to start game one of the ALDS.

Thoughts?

That makes sense if it wasn't for Severino. Doesn't his schedule put him right on regular rest for that game?
If you start with the BP you basically rule out using him in any regular fashion other than extras.
He's been very good this year, why not use him in his normal role with a short leash?

edit: Ah I see the rest of the video now. Means more Severino for the next series. That seems like too big a call for most managers to contemplate in my opinion. Girardi included.

I do kind of agree with this. If the Yankees didn't have a Severino type, a guy without right dominant stuff and instead where looking at Sonny Gray or Tanaka as your best pitcher, than maybe you jump at this idea quicker.

Kenny is always pushing this idea. It’s interesting for sure, but what happens when Chad Green gets rocked and you could have had Severino starting? Then again, it’s the Twins so ....

You mean, the Twins who have scored the third-most runs in the AL?

I haven't watched this but it's easy to overthink a coin flip game, especially when you have a week to prepare. Severino against Santana in Yankee Stadium, probably no Sano, I'll take my chances. Also why would you save Severino to pitch an almost sure loss against Kluber?

Yeah, this is all kinds of wrong. Warren isn't actually back yet, Betances is a total question mark, and Kahnle is far from a lock too, so I guess then you have Green/Robertson/Chapman for three innings each. Oh, and we saw Chad Green start nine games in the last two years, that didn't work.

This would be desperate when there's no need for desperation. If Jordan Montgomery was your best SP, maybe you think about something radical, but Severino has had as many dominant starts as anyone in the AL this year, including Kluber and Sale (6+ innings, 0 or 1 runs). Sure, he might get hit in this single stupid-ass coin flip game, so might any of the relievers as we've all seen all season.

Also you don't look ahead even slightly past a single winner-take-all baseball game, everyone knows that. I get that those guys have to fill time but ludicrous.

So this pretty much ended up happening anyway, but I still think there's no way NY should have chosen to do it going in. You need to give your 23 year old top 5 AL SP every possible chance to be a playoff stopper, luckily he will get another chance in the ALDS because he was awful today.
