Depends on who the replacement is. I'm sure plenty of people thought kicking Tito to the curb was a great move after 2011.

So who are the candidates? I see Cora's name a lot, but he's inexperienced. Not sure you want to put a first time manager in charge of this club. How many of the playoff teams this year brought in a first time manager? None, as far as I can tell. That's probably not a coincidence.

Same goes for Tek, who is even less experienced than Cora.

Ausmus shouldn't be considered. He seems like an awful fit and doesn't really have a rep as a quality manager at this point. Tito didn't either, but at least he bought into the organization's philosophy. Ausmus has publicly stated he's not into advanced stats.

I guess Cora is the best option, even without any experience as an actual manager. Of course, rumors are that the Yankees will also be looking for a new manager this winter, and Cora gets tossed around there a lot as well.

I hope they don't look back in a year and regret this. I just don't see an obvious upgrade right now.
Cora has pretty extensive international managing experience I believe. I think he’s clearly the guy.

Wow, never thought they would do it after back to back division titles. In a way I'm glad to see that it's a decision made without regard to a W/L record. I'm assuming they have someone lined up. I'd love to try Cora.

Pedey's bum knee wouldn't keep him from walking from dugout to mound and back a couple times a day, would it?

This is probably the first move in a busy offseason. I did not like Farrell as a manager but he clearly isn’t the main reason why this team underperformed.

Can anyone think of another instance where a manager was ejected from the game and then never returned to manage the team again?

I'm not surprised but I thought he did a reasonably good job (with many well publicized and discussed challenges) the last two years only to lose early in the post-season.
High expectations are a bitch to live up to.

Thanks for 2013 and best of luck

Next manager up.

I haven't seen Kapler's name thrown around, but he seems like a candidate for an interview at the very least. Managed Greenville in 2007, almost got the Dodgers job, and as Director of Player Development he's graduated some serious talent in LA.

Also he's jacked and the Sox don't hit dingers.

Just for God's sake, get a good manager and get him fast. Say...before the world series ends.
Why before end of Series? There's some good candidates that may not be available until then.

The Dodgers (Roberts) and D-Backs (Lovullo)

Personally I'd rather see them hire someone with experience. Nothing against Cora or Hale, I just think they're better off not having an inexperienced manager. I don't know who that might be, but I doubt it'll be Ausmus. Whoever it is, I just hope Hickey is the next pitching coach!

SoSH's long local nightmare is now over.

I don't mean Farrell specifically, just the argument over him.

Let the skewering of the next guy begin!

I really hope they keep Butter and Amaro. I'm more ambivalent about Chili and Willis.

Here
I thought this was arguably Farrell’s best season as manager, and that’s including the insanely fluky and lucky 2013, when a bunch of players played over their heads and overcame a number of boneheaded managerial moves. This season, I thought he was good and some of the players just underperformed and they lost a HoF slugger.

Still, I agree with the decision. John, in the end, turned out to be a passable manager, but he still should have been fired two years ago, and the fact Willis stuck around so long is a joke. I wouldn’t hire him, but he’s likely done enough to get another shot elsewhere. I tip my cap and wish him the best.

I would think that DiSarcina may be on list of candidates, but I would go with Cora. I think his 1-year experience working with young guys in Houston, combined with the fact that he's pretty much contemporaries with the vets (e.g. Pedroia), could be a nice combo.

Brad Ausmus also comes to mind as someone with a Tigers connection that has been in the mix before.

I wonder if Ruben Amaro, Jr. would get some consideration (half-serious). He's been mentioned for other managerial vacancies (Philly).

Why not Chili Davis?

This is going back a few years but I thought Burch Hobson was ejected from a game in Baltimore in 1994 and then the strike hit...so they never resumed the season. Hobson was fired before the 1995 season began.

I don’t know how he’d be received by the clubhouse (or this board, for that matter), but if he walks away or is fired by the MFYs, what about Girardi? He’s a tough guy to root for, but his MFY teams have never bottomed out like Farrell’s teams did in tough years, and always seemed to hang in the race until the last week. I think he’s an asshole, but he’s also a good manager.

Because I want a god-damned coaching staff in place before fucking January. I don't want to sit around and get the fucking dregs of the coaching world.

I hope you have a broad definition of "busy off-season." We have eight position players in place, a full rotation, a bunch of guys at the back end of the bullpen.

Maybe we want to bring Reed back, maybe find a better DH, but mostly we're talking about bench players and the bottom half of the bullpen.

If all we do is get a decent first baseman, a manager, and decent bench and depth options, we're good to go and likely to compete for a division title depending on our heavenly and that of the Yankees.

If DD hires Ausmus they deserve to finish last.
Managers hired by Dombrowski:

Buck Rodgers
Rene Lachemann
Jim Leyland
Alan Trammell
Jim "I don't like computers. Period. I don't even know how to turn one on" Leyland
Brad "I'm not a sabermetrician" Ausmus

He certainly has a type. People hoping for someone better than Farrell, I have a feeling you're going to be pretty disappointed.

I keep Chili, who by all accounts is an excellent hitting coach. If anything, I dump Victor Rodriguez, who by some accounts utilizes an outdated approach to batting, launch angles and what not that may well have been responsible for a lot of the regression we saw at the plate. (side note: I'm not sure why the Red Sox always seem to utilize a second batting coach who often has a contrasting philosophy to the main guy -- we saw this w Papa Ron back in the day)

I also try to keep Brian Butterfield, who by all accounts has done an exceptional job helping guys like X improve their footwork and fielding game. A guy like him strikes me as just who Devers needs to clean up his game at 3rd.

I'm ok with them replacing the rest of the coaching staff.

Edit: Butterfield, not Mrs. Butterworth

Speaking of wildcard candidates, if the new Marlins GM brings in his own choice of manager .... would Dombrowski consider Mattingly? No vote of confidence yet from Jeter, so anything is possible.

This is just ignorance on my part, but what are the main complaints with Ausmus (besides the fact that he was just the manager of the worst team in baseball). I get his approach is more "old-school," but how does that affect decisions on the field? More bunting?

I'm going to laugh when "nobody can be worse than Farrell" folks are calling for manager X's head next July.

While I don't think Farrell deserved the amount of flack and criticism heaped upon him on this board, I can't really say he impressed me.

His bullpen management was suspect, and he chronically overexposed SP's when they were clearly gassed. Continuation of Tito's "stealing outs" SP strategy backfired predictably and was detrimental to middle relievers. Mix in a few boneheaded pinch-run decisions, one that probably ruined Steven Wright for good.

Yet he had the roster's respect, was good at managing young players, and there wasn't really that much drama during his tenure. So considering that, I do think he was pretty successful...this is one of the harder markets to survive in. Though, results are important and early postseason flameouts don't bode well for Sox managers. Perhaps the team could benefit from some new management so I'm not shedding any tears about a chinless 2018.

I would not want Mattingly. If we’re going to hire an ex-MFY who is currently managing another team, I’d rather hire the one with a championship and a history of his teams overachieving than one who has won nothing and whose teams always disappoint.

I'll piggyback off of this just to say my piece. Farrell was unjustly killed around here for managing by the book, the same book Tito uses as well. He was well spoken, protected his players, tough when needed and by all accounts worked alongside the SABR wing of the FO. Someone here recently wrote that when Farrell is gone DD will take his place on the hot seat and I wholeheartedly agree. Given that it's DD's neck on the line now he's going to stick to his type and his type is fucking horrific. Enjoy it, folks.

Every team in baseball would be interested........ and the Sox would be last on HIS list given the way things ended with them.
Saracsm. I think it very unlikely that Tito will be available, short of him placing bets on NYY, regardless of the outcome.

Of course it depends on who they replace him with, but Farrell was not a good manager. The fact that he led a team people thought would win the division to win the division is great, but too many times over the years he has looked really bad.

It's a shame Tito went, but after that 2011 September collapse, I'm not sure what you do.

He made more "head scratching" moves in a week than Farrell did in a month.

I was all aboard the Fire Farrell train but after reading this list I am very scared for what the future holds....
I am hoping he picks a manager off of the list taht everyone seems to be using. Alex Cora, Gabe Kapler, Joe McEwing and Sandy Alomar Jr.
If he re-hired one of these baseball lifer retreads who thinks anyone that uses a computer is a nerd, we are all in deep deep trouble

I agree, DD has a type. What I'm hoping is that they hire a young, relatively unexperienced manager, like Cora, and then hire a somewhat experienced manager that is DD's type for bench coach.

I can't imagine John Henry wouldn't have a say in the manager or the credentials a manager should have.
I'm not worried about a SABR hater being hired
