As a Red Sox fan, I, for one, am happy that the top candidate people believe can connect with younger players is off the market.

Yankees fans, your take on this? As a Sox fan, this move makes me happy, tough place to manage NY, just like Boston.

He's not that good a manager. He let a guy with 70 good innings in his career pitch with the season on the line against McCann instead of using Chapman. He also probably pissed off Sabathia and other starters by yanking them in the fifth with sizable leads during the season. I don't like the possibility of an upgrade here. But of course they could and hopefully will find someone worse.

This seems like a bizarre time to fire him. He greatly exceeded preseason expectations. There were other years that would've made sense to move on but why now?

Was it his decision to pull CC and others early or was that a direction from the front office to limit SP innings?

I liked Girardi. Stability with the success of this season and a young core moving forward was preferable to me. I hope it works out and the grass turns out to be greener with someone else.

Really the only feeling I have is surprise with a slight concern. Joe did not have a good playoff run and I'd question a lot of his calls during the season as well. Multiple times throughout the year it seemed that he wasn't communicating well with the pitching staff while openly telling the media that players like Betances or Sabathia were mad at him.

The only concern comes from the lack of management depth out there currently. To be honest, even the managers who have been hired don't seem like missed opportunities because nobody knows how a manager will reach in NY (or Boston). My hope is that Cashman has someone in mind already.

It's possible but this is a guy who is in love with pitching changes and matching up ad nauseum. I can see the limit maybe for a Montgomery but not for CC or even Garcia who is just cannon fodder.

This is really surprising. He made a glaring, Farrell-esque mistake in the postseason by not challenging a play, but also had some bolder managerial moves that paid off. He was one game away from bringing a team in a rebuilding year to the World Series. He will get manager of the year votes. Something is slightly off about this and I'm glad it's not on us for a change.

Since there were already rumors about him retiring, I wonder if he told the Yankees he would have to take the decision year-by-year or something and the Yankees just wanted someone committed more long term. No idea if there's any truth to that but could be one reason as I agree this decision seems a bit weird.

Well, he's been fired after winning Manager of the Year before.

If watching these playoffs hasn't taught fans that all managers make "head scratching" moves, than nothing will. Managers are seldom fired for on the field actions. Something is going on behind the scenes, just as it was with Farrell.

I do have to say, Cashman coming back is the main thing, and as long as he does and runs the process, I'm confident the Yankees will find a good replacement that fits the organization. Torre was a good hire. Girardi was a good hire.

Really glad that DD locked up Alex Cora as quickly as he did.

Time for the Yankees to start working the phones....

Going to be tricky to find someone who can both handle the pressure and balance the needs of the handful of vets with all the youngsters busting onto the 25 man roster and into starting roles - doesn't help that this past season has greatly raised expectations for next year. Yanks will certainly "outbid" the Phillies and Nats (especially the Nats!) but also have to find someone willing to be under the microscope, so I agree with others who suggest they will look largely to former coaches of theirs/former Yankees players...

Nice call.

So from where I sit it seems like Binder Joe went by the numbers too much and that hurt the feelings of his players.

Suzyn Waldman on WFAN likens this to the Buck firing. And that the Ys thought they needed a new guy to get them to the next level in the next 3-5 years.

I assume she has been spoon fed this by well placed sources.

The Yankees will not replace him with someone less in-tune with statistical analysis. I guess they just want someone who is less of a jerk? Who knows.

Torre was an upgrade over Showalter and the perfect veteran manager for that team. Who is the Torre type out there that will take this team to the next level? They will likely have to roll the dice with a first time manager.
