Faster Guy had 'em all beat.
False. Chili Guy remains to this day the funniest bit/character I’ve ever heard. The origin of him and the first couple recordings they got of him is peak radio for me. Right up there with prime O&A stuff.

I was surprised to hear the other day that CBS Radio put an embargo on them from playing Chili Guy clips. Some guy called in and mentioned it and Fred said for years they've been banned from playing it for some reason. They may bring them back with the new owners.

I loved Faster Guy though.

Holy shit, Fred losing his mind on Minihane all of a sudden.

Wasn't his best rant, but it got to the core of the problem. T & R are professionals. They do radio right and the take few "shortcuts". Dennis and Kirk do nothing but take shortcuts and play to the lowest common denominator. Its pathetic. Kirk (like Fred said), tries to be Howard Stern-lite...but it just is awful radio. It is so contrived.

On the T & R side...Wallach is just so bad. At least in the 6-7 hour. Maybe they reign him in a little bit later on, but when talking about anything to do with the local teams, he is given way too much air time. I counted 4 times that he talked over and interrupted Fred while talking about the Bruins.

Radio Wars this morning! Admittedly, I found myself flipping back and forth between Kirk and Fred ranting on each other. It was entertaining to say the least.

Fred is so spot on. WEEI's fake WWE/soap opera shit is the most transparent, lame crap ever. The fact that people ever believe it and tune in to hear it hurts my head. You couldn't pay me money to listen to their morning show.

Yeah, I guess it's become a little old for me. Although I admittedly still love hearing the old "VIP on Swole" song. A classic.

Agreed on Bird. He is brutal. Although I think Nick does a good job -- probably TOO good of a job in contrast to Adolfo -- with the "man on the street" audio bits.
Adolfo was great, but it became too much. That on-air blowout a few months before he left was the final straw.

Bird is... fine... if they sprinkled him here and there he’d be better. They’re relying on him too much. I like Nick and he’s done a good job with Recaps, discovering Rock & Roll Mike and Guy from Machine (even though T&R beat the shit out of them though) and other bits (Rex Ryan Stand-up, Jagr interview, Snow is Bananas). Nick mentioned on twitter how he’s been going through some shit in the past year that’s kept him back. Hopefully he steps up and they involve him more (not as a dumb “character”) but I don’t think audio is the main issue with the show.

I feel like the show has gotten less edgy and more cautious. Maybe it’s because of the merger and having new owners? They need to evolve and get out of this cautious funk.

The odd insane-father/mentally-challenged-son relationship between Chili Guy and Qadalfo was truly hilarious.

You can also check out WEEI since they played it immediately after it aired on 98.5, just as Fred said it would.

If Fred was right about one thing, Kirk's Bad Boy of Sports Radio schtick is one of the most pathetic things going. HE'S WILLING TO TAKE ON ALL THE BEAT WRITERS!

Edit: i was trying to find the article that Fred referenced this morning about them being Stern ripoffs by Minihane and realized that this thread and the D&C Shedding The Fat thread are often a top 5 hit on google depending on what you search for in respect to the shows.

Classic Fred rant. Loved it!

This Brady contest is horrendous. Really not interested in the shitty lifestyle of these slobs!
Agreed on both counts.

At least it's something different and one of the great things about the show. It's like an inside joke that only Fred and Rich are enjoying and they don't really care if we like it or not.

Some of these bits are going to be awesome and some are going to flop

I agree. This is a mix of sad, disturbing and slightly entertaining, but it's at least different. BTW the Lord of the Rings girl was pretty hot.

Have the Meriweather interviews declined? Not that it was ever must listen radio, but I liked them before. Now I've only heard the last few and it seems like it's T&R shooting off inside jokes about people Meriweather doesn't know, him saying "huh?" the hosts talking over him, Meriweather not knowing what is going on, awkward silence and them moving on.

It was really hard to listen to this week.

Sounds like Boomer may be gonzo. They sounded far more enthusiastic about trying to get him back for next year than he was, although he did throw them a bone to say “hopefully I’ll be back.”

That show needs guests that know what's supposed to be the primary subject matter, sports. Not an area Toucher and Rich are at all strong at. And I trust Boomer's opinion a hell of a lot more than Breer's, to name one.

Has to be a management decision. With WFAN now an Entercom station and the Sports Hub Beasley Media it seems like he will be back to WEEI.

"Yeah, we're not doing that."

Awesome. That's worth 2 get out of jail cards.

I'm on Team Fred on this one. Good for the Patriots short term, bad for McDaniels long term.
How "long term?" I think anyone would be stunned if he's not the next HC of the NEP. Josh has all the job security and money he needs here. Unless he just becomes a colosal fuck-up somehow, Bill isn't firing him. The Krafts aren't either. 10 years from now if he interviews for the London Monarch's job or something, maybe...

They traded the heir apparent to Brady.
Brady has maybe 3 years left at best.
He would have to follow a legend and the greatest coach in history.
There's supposedly no guarantee that he's going to the next Head Coach.
He was a disaster in Denver (movie rights to the title)
He screwed over the Colts after accepting so badly that his agent publicly quit.

He's screwed long term unless he's happy being an Offensive Coordinator, which he may be.

And if he went to Indy and failed, which is a strong possibility with Luck potentially being a roadblock rather than an asset and a dubious GM, he would never get another HC chance.

There's been plenty of chatter that there are a few QBs in the upcoming draft who would be ideal, some have even said "perfect," for New England's system. Obviously Brady is Brady and anyone new is going to be a step down by definition, but I think it's a little presumptuous to assume that the cupboards will be bare when/if McDaniels takes over.

That said, yeah, it will be his last chance unless he has a collection of horseshoes and rabbit's feet hanging around.

I understand the sentiment. It's a dick move to back out of an agreed contract. And his history is not stellar outside of his gig being sandwiched between the best coach and the best QB of his era (at the very least).

But the other side of me loves pointing a finger and shouting "Ha-Ha, Indy!" Because f them, their loser druggie thanksdad owner, and his Jerry Garcia guitars. He deserves that and more.

I think McD will be fine. A couple guesstimates:
-BB coaches 2 more seasons, 2018 and 2019.
-McD becomes head coach in 2020.

If McD is a BFF (Big, Fat, Failure), he could be gone 2023 or 2024. By that time, there will be some teams in need of a HC, and 6 years down the road is a long ways away. Memories are short.

Could not agree more. I'm not crying for Indy at all and absolutely love this becasue... Fuck Indy and all the rules Polian had changed to help Peyton and Deflategate and everything else you said.

I'm also not a big McDaniel's Fan and don't trust him with the keys to the Patriots post BB. However, if this extends BB's shelf life because he has an OC that he trusts and doesn't have to re train... I'm OK with that

They're a whiny, pissy, big shot in a one horse town, lucky to stink enough in the right year that they got an elite QB and never won without him, crap franchise that should disappear back into mediocrity where they've lived pretty much non stop since abandoning Baltimore in the middle of the night and ripping the hearts out of a hundred thousand sports fans. Fuck those guys.

Does Fred have a medical condition or does he just drink too much every night. The gravelly voice is getting really hard to listen to.

I moved out of Boston almost two years ago and only check in on T&R (via stream or podcast) during or just after big events. The Bird era is largely a mystery to me but in limited exposure I must say I don’t get it either. Same with Rock & Roll Mike. Fred and Rich usually have A+ comedic instincts so I’m mildly surprised. Finding reliably funny characters isn’t easy, and T&R were blessed for a while (Intern Nick, Adolfo, Chili Guy, Faster Guy, and recurring stuff that came out of the Fens and even Pink Hat bits), but the current lineup doesn’t seem to be at that level. Part of this is maybe me losing touch with what the local vibe is, too. I’ll always support the show, bit maybe they need some secondary character turnover.

Yeah, I think Adolfo had a weirdo-magnet attribute that was valuable in his man-on-the-street role. Bird just goes out and talks to dudebro townies from Everett.

I missed the impetus to the conversation but I heard Rich talking about others not talking about the Bruins. I pretty much stopped listening to sports radio outside T&R, is this accurate? Are we back to the mocking Holley Hockey Minute?

It was in response to Kirk saying essentially hockey talk is a radio ratings killer and that's why they (K&C) don't do it. And partially in response to Dale saying there's two people in town who actually can talk hockey (himself and Felger) and everyone else fakes it.

Even Felger doesn’t do it though. They’re still too busy beating Patriots talk to death. Sure, he’ll do an obligatory minute or two here and there, but that’s about it.
